- Is an arm’s weight limit compared with the monitor with or without its stand?
- Can a monitor arm clamp onto a thin or thick desk?
- Can a monitor with no VESA holes go on an arm?
Choose a monitor arm by matching its load range, desk clamp range and VESA pattern (the standard screw-hole layout on the back of a monitor) to your setup. Among current monitors from major brands, an arm with a minimum load of 2 kg or less and a maximum of 4.5 kg or more covers every monitor compared. The monitors checked weigh 2–4.5 kg without the stand.
This compares current arms from Ergotron, ELECOM, Sanwa, VIVO and other major brands using the makers’ specs as of October 2026.
The three conditions an arm must meet
These are the three checks this article compares. An arm fits when all three pass.
- Weight: the monitor without its stand is at or above the arm’s minimum load and at or below its maximum
- Desk thickness: the desktop is within the range the clamp can grip
- VESA: the arm’s mounting plate matches the screw-hole spacing on the monitor
If the maker also lists a supported screen size, check that too. This article did not look at whether screen size or load limit takes priority.
Arms by monitor weight
Compare the “without stand” weight from the monitor’s spec sheet. (Assumptions: current arms from major brands and the makers’ published ranges. The weight compared is the monitor without its stand)
| Weight without stand | Arms in range | Out of range |
|---|---|---|
| 2 kg | 8 | 3 too light, 0 too heavy, 2 can’t be checked |
| 3 kg | 9 | 2 too light, 0 too heavy, 2 can’t be checked |
| 5 kg | 10 | 1 too light, 0 too heavy, 2 can’t be checked |
| 8 kg | 8 | 1 too light, 2 too heavy, 2 can’t be checked |
| 10 kg | 5 | 0 too light, 6 too heavy, 2 can’t be checked |
| 12 kg | 2 | 0 too light, 11 too heavy, 0 can’t be checked |
| 15 kg | 1 | 0 too light, 12 too heavy, 0 can’t be checked |
- “Can’t be checked” means the maker doesn’t publish a minimum load. Those arms are not counted as in range
- Among current arms from major brands, in range by weight, 2 kg to 4.5 kg: 8+; up to 11.3 kg: 3+; up to 19.1 kg: 1+; beyond that: none
- Among the monitors compared, 4 of them weigh less than the 3.2 kg minimum load of one arm checked. A monitor under the minimum can make the arm rise by itself
Arms by desk thickness
Every arm clamps a fixed range of desktop thickness. (Assumptions: the clamp specs of current arms from major brands, without counting grommet mounts that need a drilled hole)
| Desk thickness | Arms that clamp it | Out of range |
|---|---|---|
| 10 mm | 10 | 2 too thin, 0 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
| 15 mm | 11 | 1 too thin, 0 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
| 20 mm | 12 | 0 too thin, 0 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
| 30 mm | 12 | 0 too thin, 0 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
| 50 mm | 12 | 0 too thin, 0 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
| 60 mm | 10 | 0 too thin, 2 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
| 70 mm | 8 | 0 too thin, 4 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
| 85 mm | 6 | 0 too thin, 6 too thick, 1 can’t be checked |
- Among current arms from major brands, a 10 mm desk fits 10 and a 15 mm desk fits 11. Clamping by desk thickness, 20 mm to 50 mm: 12+; up to 85 mm: 6+; up to 108 mm: 1+; beyond that: none
- Glass and hollow desktops were not checked
How to check your own setup
- Find the monitor’s weight. Use the “without stand” figure on the spec sheet
- Measure the desk thickness. Measure the edge where the clamp will grip
- Match the monitor’s VESA spacing to the arm’s supported patterns. Among the monitors compared, all use 100×100 mm screw holes, and every arm compared takes 100×100
All three checks must pass. The tool below does them for you.
Monitor arm fit checker (weight, desk thickness, VESA)
Enter your monitor's weight without the stand, your desktop thickness and the VESA hole pattern to see which of the arms checked are within spec.

Picks by condition
One pick per condition. These were not tested in person.
Monitor 2–4.5 kg without the stand, desk 20–50 mm, VESA 100×100
The maker’s spec covers 2–9 kg load, VESA 75x75 / 100x100, desktops 10–80 mm thick (maker specs). With a minimum load of exactly 2 kg, this pick is borderline for the lightest monitor checked.
Sold by VIVO (ships from Amazon). Black (STAND-V001O). The maker also sells a white version; whether the rating count is shared across colors was not verified.
Monitor 15 kg without the stand, desk 20–50 mm, VESA 100×100
The maker’s spec covers 9.1–19.1 kg load, VESA 75x75 / 100x100 / 200x100 / 200x200, desktops 10–66 mm thick (maker specs). It suits monitors around 15 kg.
Sold by Ergotron, Inc (maker). Matte black, standard pivot (45-475-224). Delivery was free to New York 10001 on the check date. Whether the rating count is shared with other models on the listing wasn't checked.
FAQ
Why does my monitor arm keep rising with a light monitor?
A monitor lighter than the arm’s minimum load can make it rise by itself. 4 of the monitors compared weigh less than the 3.2 kg minimum load of one arm compared.
Is an arm’s weight limit compared with the monitor with or without its stand?
Use the weight without the stand, because the stand comes off when you mount the arm. Among current arms from major brands, in range by weight, 2 kg to 4.5 kg: 8+; up to 11.3 kg: 3+; up to 19.1 kg: 1+; beyond that: none.
Can a monitor arm clamp onto a thin or thick desk?
Each arm clamps only a set range of thickness. Among current arms from major brands, a 10 mm desk fits 10 and a 15 mm desk fits 11.
Clamping by desk thickness, 20 mm to 50 mm: 12+; up to 85 mm: 6+; up to 108 mm: 1+; beyond that: none.
Can a monitor with no VESA holes go on an arm?
A monitor with no VESA holes cannot attach directly to the arm; check whether a compatible mounting adapter exists. This article did not check adapter fit.
Every monitor compared uses 100×100 mm holes, and every arm compared takes 100×100.
Data and formulas used (for verification)
How this was checked: Weight ranges, clamp thickness and VESA come from each maker’s own documents, checked in October 2026. An arm with no published minimum load is not counted as a fit, since the minimum can’t be checked. Each pick is the cheapest, shipping included, of the current arms from major brands that have a maker-published spec and enough ratings. Check prices on Amazon.com. Ergotron’s Japan page and US PDF differ on the HX clamp minimum, and this article uses the US PDF’s 10 mm.
Sources: Ergotron / Ergotron HX (US PDF) / Ergotron HX (Japan page) / ELECOM / Sanwa Direct / Green House
Method
- Population: 13 monitors with a maker-published weight without stand, and 13 arms with maker documents (load range, clamp thickness and VESA are the makers’ own figures)
- Weight check: minimum ≤ weight without stand ≤ maximum is in range; below the minimum is ‘below’; above the maximum is ‘above’. An arm with no published minimum is ‘can’t be checked’ and is not counted as in range
- Desk-thickness check: clamp minimum ≤ thickness ≤ clamp maximum clamps. Missing figures mean ‘can’t be checked’. The Ergotron HX clamp minimum is 16 mm on the Japan page and 10 mm in the US PDF, so the Japanese article counts 16 mm and the English article 10 mm
- VESA check: whether the arm’s supported list includes 100×100. All 13 monitors checked are 100×100
- Counts per band (for example 8+ in the table) are the minimum number of arms in range over every weight or thickness inside the band, in 0.01 steps; the count beyond the last band is checked to be zero
- ‘Covers all monitors’ means minimum load ≤ the lightest monitor and maximum load ≥ the heaviest. An arm whose minimum equals the lightest monitor has zero margin (borderline)
- The heavy-monitor pick assumes 15 kg and desks of 20–50 mm (a common range, not measured). No unit was tested
