A 27-inch monitor can work on a 60 cm deep desk, but on its own stand it’s borderline. Among current 27-inch models from major brands, on a 60 cm desk, a 27-inch up to 18.2 cm deep with its stand reaches the 56.72 cm target sitting back. The closer it is to that depth, the less room is left; right at that depth it’s borderline.
This compares current models from Dell, LG, BenQ, ASUS and other major brands on their official dimensions.
Aim for 56.72 cm (22.33 in) from your eyes to the screen, a figure worked out for this guide to look the same as a 24-inch at OSHA’s distance. By this estimate, on a monitor arm, a 60 cm desk gives 58–65 cm from your eyes, enough for the 27-inch target of 56.72 cm.
Desk depth at a glance
The table assumes your desk is against a wall and the monitor is pushed all the way back. The eye positions 10 cm, 12.5 cm and 15 cm are assumptions for leaning forward, sitting normally and sitting back, not measurements. (Assumptions: current 24- and 27-inch models from major brands, on their own stands, eyes 10 cm to 15 cm from the desk’s front edge.)
| Desk depth | 24-inch | 27-inch |
|---|---|---|
| 45 cm (17.7 in) | None of the models compared reach the target | None of the models compared reach the target |
| 50 cm (19.7 in) | None of the models compared reach the target | None of the models compared reach the target |
| 55 cm (21.7 in) | Depends on model and posture (6 models reach it sitting back; 1 borderline) | None of the models compared reach the target |
| 60 cm (23.6 in) | Every model compared reaches it sitting normally (leaning forward depends on the model) | Depends on model and posture (2 models reach it sitting back; 2 borderline) |
| 65 cm (25.6 in) | Every model compared reaches the target | Every model compared reaches it sitting back |
| 70 cm (27.6 in) | Every model compared reaches the target | Every model compared reaches the target |
| 75 cm (29.5 in) | Every model compared reaches the target | Every model compared reaches the target |
Cable clearance isn’t included in the calculation. Where a cell says borderline, leave room for cables too.
Checking your own desk
You need three numbers to check your own desk.
- Measure the desk depth from the front edge to the back edge
- Measure where your eyes sit. Sit normally, look from the side, and measure from the desk’s front edge to your eyes. This guide assumes 10 cm to 15 cm
- Look up the monitor’s depth with stand on its spec sheet. It runs 16.3–21 cm for 24-inch and 17.7–22 cm for 27-inch
- Compare your desk’s width with the width on the spec sheet
If your eyes sit 1 cm closer to the screen than assumed, you need 1 cm more desk depth. The tool below does the math for you.

The difference between 24 and 27 inches is viewing distance
Viewing distance decides the fit more than stand size does. A bigger screen needs you to sit farther back.
- 24-inch: at least OSHA’s 50 cm
- 27-inch: at least 56.72 cm, which looks the same as a 24-inch at OSHA’s distance. That figure is worked out for this guide, not an official standard
Can a monitor arm fit a 27-inch on a small desk?
By this estimate, on an arm, a 27-inch reaches the 56.72 cm target from a 58.8 cm deep desk in every assumed setup. That depth is borderline, and below 51.7 cm it doesn’t reach. An arm removes the stand’s base, so the screen sits closer to the back edge.
- The figures here assume the screen ends up 10–12 cm in front of the back edge. Makers don’t publish this, and if it ends up 1 cm closer, you need 1 cm more desk depth
- With the assumed arm position, on a 50 cm (19.7 in) deep desk a 24-inch on an arm ends up 48–55 cm from your eyes, so reaching its 50 cm target depends on how you sit. A 27-inch doesn’t reach its target there
- In the assumed arm positions, a 24-inch on an arm can reach its target from 45 cm (17.8 in), in some arm positions and ways of sitting. That depth is borderline
- A clamp-on arm needs a gap between the desk and the wall
- Check the arm’s weight limit
To pick an arm, see how to pick a monitor arm.
1080p or 1440p at 27 inches?
Among current models from major brands, on a 60 cm deep desk with the included stand, go with 1080p. If an arm gets you the target distance, 1440p (2560×1440 pixels) works too. Text looks sharper, but you’ll need to scale it up.
Assumption in this section: letters 12 px tall at 100% scaling. With default-size text you may need more scaling.
- With the assumed text size, eyes to screen 56.72 cm to 60 cm: 1440p at 125% or more; up to 72 cm: plan on 150%; beyond that: scale up. With default-size text, 125% is often not enough
- A 1080p model with a shallow stand gets closer to the target distance
- The more you scale up, the less fits on screen at once
- If text is hard to read, raise the scaling (on Windows: Settings, System, Display, Scale)
Picks for small desks
One Amazon.com pick per condition, none tested in person.
24-inch on a 60 cm deep desk, sitting normally
27-inch on a 65 cm (25.6 in) deep desk, sitting normally
It’s borderline: under 1 cm to spare.
27-inch 1440p on a 70 cm (27.6 in) deep desk, sitting normally
Good if you want smoother text. Plan on 150% scaling.
Monitor arm for a 27-inch
Its specs list support for 2–9 kg load, VESA 75x75 / 100x100, desktops 10–85 mm thick (maker specs). The monitors above weigh 2.0 kg to 3.95 kg without the stand, inside the arm’s 2 to 9 kg range, and all use 100×100 VESA, which fits (the 2.0 kg Samsung sits right at the lower limit).
This is an import, sold by Amazon Japan. Local warranty support isn't confirmed.
FAQ
Is a 27-inch monitor too big for a 60 cm deep desk?
It fits, but on its own stand it’s borderline. Among current 27-inch models from major brands, on a 60 cm desk, a 27-inch up to 18.2 cm deep with its stand reaches the 56.72 cm target sitting back.
The closer it is to that depth, the less room is left; right at that depth it’s borderline.
How deep does a desk need to be for a 27-inch monitor?
Among the models compared, every model compared reaches the 56.72 cm eye-to-screen target from a 68.8 cm deep desk for a 27-inch. A 24-inch reaches its 50 cm target from 61 cm.
Right at those depths it’s borderline.
1080p or 1440p for a 27-inch monitor on a small desk?
Among current 27-inch models from major brands, on a 60 cm desk with the included stand pick 1080p, or 1440p if an arm gets you the target distance. Scaling is a rule of thumb that depends on viewing distance and text size.
Can a monitor arm make a 27-inch work on a small desk?
By this estimate, on a monitor arm, a 60 cm desk gives 58–65 cm from your eyes, enough for the 27-inch target of 56.72 cm. On an arm, a 27-inch reaches the 56.72 cm target from a 58.8 cm deep desk in every assumed setup.
That depth is borderline, and below 51.7 cm it doesn’t reach. Compared with a typical stand among current models from major brands, the screen sits an estimated about 6–10 cm farther back.
Does a 27-inch stand take more depth than a 24-inch?
Depth with stand runs 16.3–21 cm for 24-inch and 17.7–22 cm for 27-inch. Compare spec sheets instead of going by size.
What size fits a shallow desk?
In this calculation, on a 60 cm desk only 2 of the 27-inch models compared reach the target on their own stand, borderline; an arm does, in the assumed position. Screens smaller than 24 inches weren’t checked.
Data and formulas used (for verification)
How this was checked: Worked out from official dimensions, as of October 2026. Arms were chosen only if the maker publishes a weight range. The Amazon Basics arm didn’t qualify. Picks are the cheapest with shipping among current models from major brands that are sold new on Amazon.com with enough ratings. Check the price before you buy.

Method
- Eye-to-screen distance = desk depth − depth with stand (for an arm: the distance from the desk’s back edge to the screen) + distance from the desk’s front edge to your eyes.
- Targets: for 24-inch, OSHA’s minimum of 50 cm. For 27-inch, the distance that gives the same viewing angle as a 23.8-inch at 50 cm: 50 cm × the ratio of the two active-area widths = 56.72 cm (22.33 in). This is worked out for this guide, not an official standard.
- Eye positions assumed from the desk’s front edge: leaning forward 10 cm, sitting normally 12.5 cm, sitting back 15 cm. These are assumptions, not measurements. The arm’s screen position is an estimate of 10–12 cm from the desk’s back edge (makers don’t publish it). If either is off by 1 cm, the needed desk depth is off by 1 cm.
- Each cell checks every stand among the 8 models 24-inch and 7 models 27-inch models, in the leaning-forward and sitting-back cases. All reach: yes. Some: depends. None: no.
- Needed desk depth is the value where every model and posture reaches, rounded up to one decimal. Under 1 cm of room is called borderline. Cable clearance is not included.
- Text: letter height = 12 px × pixel pitch × scaling. Maximum viewing distance = letter height ÷ tan (MHLW visual angle 20 arcminutes), rounded down to whole cm.
- Dimensions come from the makers’ official specs (checked 2026-10-07). No unit was measured in person. The arm was chosen by weight range, VESA and desk-thickness specs only; screen position on it was not measured.
