On a 27-inch screen, 1440p shows more lines of code than 4K. At 60 cm with text at the target size, 1440p shows 34 lines and 4K shows 28–29 lines, an estimate.
A 31.5-inch 4K shows 41–42 lines in landscape, and a rotatable 23.8-inch 1080p (portrait) shows 58 lines.
The target is that a capital letter (like A or H) looks 20 arcminutes tall to your eye. An arcminute is 1/60 of a degree, an angle rather than a time. Japan’s health ministry guidance recommends it for letters and digits.
These are estimates from official dimensions, not lines counted on real screens.
Lines of code by screen
The line count follows the screen’s height and the scaling. (Assumptions: VS Code’s default settings on Windows with Consolas, side bar, minimap and terminal closed, capital letters at 20 arcminutes, orientation listed in each row. Estimates from interface sizes, not counted on real screens)
| Screen | Lines at 100% scaling | Scaling for target size | Lines at target size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23.8-inch 1080p (landscape) | 47–48 lines | 150% | 28–29 lines |
| 27-inch 1080p (landscape) | 47–48 lines | 150% | 28–29 lines |
| 27-inch 1440p (landscape) | 66–67 lines | 175% | 34 lines |
| 27-inch 4K (landscape) | 104–105 lines | 300% | 28–29 lines |
| 31.5-inch 4K (landscape) | 104–105 lines | 225% | 41–42 lines |
| 34-inch ultrawide (landscape) | 66–67 lines | 175% | 34 lines |
| 23.8-inch 1080p (portrait) | 91–92 lines | 150% | 58 lines |
| 27-inch 4K (portrait) | 192–193 lines | 300% | 58 lines |
- Scaling means how much the whole screen, text and menus included, is enlarged
- The table rounds scaling up to preset steps and counts lines at that scaling. The steps are this guide’s assumption, not checked against Windows’ own rules. Finer scaling would show the same lines or more
- In this calculation, at 100% scaling and 60 cm from the screen, capital letters on every screen in the table are smaller than the 20 arcminutes target
How to check your own screen
You can estimate your line count from your viewing distance and screen type.
- Measure from your eyes to the screen. Sit the way you normally do, and measure to the screen surface
- Find your screen’s size and resolution. The spec sheet lists them, like “27-inch 3840×2160”
- Find the closest row in the table. If your distance differs, use the calculator below
- A landscape 24-inch shows 36 lines from 50 cm and 23 lines from 70 cm, so lines fall as you move back

27-inch: 4K or 1440p?
For more lines, pick 1440p; for finer text, pick 4K. At 60 cm, the three 27-inch types come out like this:
- 1080p: needs 126% or more, table scaling 150%, 28–29 lines
- 1440p: needs 168% or more, table scaling 175%, 34 lines
- 4K: needs 252% or more, table scaling 300%, 28–29 lines
4K must jump to a much larger step, so it shows fewer lines. If you could set the scaling more finely than the preset steps, a 27-inch would show 35–36 lines at 1080p, 1440p and 4K alike, within 1 line of each other. Among the screens in the table, only the 27-inch 4K has pixels smaller than the angle the eye can resolve (1 arcminute) from 60 cm.
At other distances, a 27-inch 4K needs different scaling:
- 50 cm (19.7 in) to 59.6 cm: 250%
- Over 59.6 cm to 71.5 cm: 300%
- Over 71.5 cm to 83.5 cm: 350%
- Over 83.5 cm: scaling higher than 350%
- Right at each upper limit, it is borderline
Portrait mode: more lines, fewer columns
Turning a screen to portrait adds many lines, and fewer columns (characters per line) fit. Column counts assume line numbers of 5 digits or fewer.
- At 60 cm with text at the target size, a portrait 24-inch shows 58 lines, more than a landscape 31.5-inch (41–42 lines). A portrait 24-inch fits 73–74 columns per line, so neither PEP 8’s 79 characters nor Prettier’s default of 80 characters fits
- A portrait 27-inch 4K fits 73–74 columns per line, so Black’s default of 88 characters does not fit
Common line-length limits come from coding tools.
- PEP 8 (Python’s style guide): 79 characters
- Prettier (a formatter for JavaScript and more), by default: 80 characters
- Black (a Python formatter), by default: 88 characters
To use portrait, choose a monitor whose spec sheet lists pivot (it rotates).
Ultrawide and dual monitors
If you want more width, use an ultrawide or two identical monitors side by side. Lines follow screen height and scaling.
- 34-inch ultrawide (landscape): 34 lines
- Two 27-inch 1440p screens: 34 lines on each
- 27-inch 4K (landscape): 28–29 lines
- 31.5-inch 4K (landscape): 41–42 lines
For more code stacked vertically, pick a taller screen or portrait. To keep code and reference material on separate screens, pick dual monitors. A 34-inch ultrawide shows 34 lines, the same as a 27-inch 1440p screen of the same height, with more columns at 235–236 columns.
Picks for programming
One pick per use. These were not tested in person. Every line count here is an estimate at 60 cm, target-size text and the table’s scaling.
Of the models checked, each pick has maker-confirmed size and resolution, and is the cheapest, shipping included, that meets all of these:
- New on Amazon.com
- At least 100 ratings and 4 stars or more
- Not an import, and the same model number as the official spec
- For portrait picks, the maker’s official spec page confirms the screen can pivot (rotate)
Check the price on the store page.
For more lines in portrait (23.8-inch 1080p, can rotate)
58 lines in portrait and 28–29 lines in landscape.
For sharp text on a 27-inch (27-inch 4K)
28–29 lines, fewer than a 27-inch 1440p (34 lines), but with finer text. It needs 300% scaling.
For more lines in landscape (31.5-inch 4K)
41–42 lines, more than a 27-inch 4K (28–29 lines). Make sure your desk is deep enough.
FAQ
4K or 1440p for programming on a 27-inch?
Pick 4K for sharper text and 1440p for more lines. In this calculation, at 60 cm with text at the target size, a 27-inch shows 28–29 lines at 1080p, 34 lines at 1440p and 28–29 lines at 4K.
Among the screens in the table, only the 27-inch 4K has pixels smaller than the angle the eye can resolve (1 arcminute) from 60 cm.
Is a 24-inch or 27-inch monitor better for coding?
For more code on screen, a 27-inch 1440p shows more than a 24-inch. In this calculation, at 60 cm with text at the target size, a 24-inch shows 28–29 lines, a 27-inch 1440p 34 lines, and a 31.5-inch 41–42 lines.
At 60 cm with text at the target size, a 27-inch 4K shows the same 28–29 lines as a 24-inch 1080p in the table’s preset scale steps.
How many lines of code fit in portrait mode?
In portrait a 24-inch shows 58 lines, well above 28–29 lines in landscape. This is an estimate at 60 cm (23.6 in) with text at the target size.
Does a Mac show a different number of lines?
Yes, the defaults differ. VS Code’s default on a Mac is 12 px text with 1.5× line height, against 14 px and 1.35× on Windows.
This guide uses the Windows defaults and has not checked the Mac default font’s dimensions, so it gives no Mac line counts.
Data and formulas used (for verification)
How this was checked: Calculated from official dimensions and default settings as of October 2026. Screen sizes: EIZO EV2490, EIZO EV2740X, EIZO EV2795, EIZO EV3240X, EIZO EV3450XC, ASUS 23.8-inch 1080p. Pixel size: Dell 27-inch 1080p, Dell 27-inch 1440p, Dell 27-inch 4K. Picks’ official specs (including pivot): Dell S2425HSM, LG 27US500-W, ASUS VP327Q. VS Code defaults: fontInfo.ts. Text size target: Japan’s health ministry guidance (PDF). Pixel visibility: ITU-R BT.1845. Line length: PEP 8, Prettier, Black. The font is Windows’ Consolas, and other fonts change the results. The 34-inch ultrawide’s size was not cross-checked against another maker.
Method
- Lines = floor((screen height in px ÷ scaling − top/bottom UI bands) ÷ 19 px line height). Line height = round(14 px × 1.35), the VS Code defaults on Windows
- The UI bands use a range: 162 px in the classic layout (taskbar 48, title bar 35, tabs 35, breadcrumbs 22, status bar 22) to 174 px in Modern UI (tab 33, status bar +6, card margins 4×2, an estimate). Bottom panels such as the terminal are assumed closed. Lines are computed for both and shown as a range such as 28–29 when they differ
- The 48 px taskbar had no official source and was measured in this guide’s working environment (Windows 11 10.0.26200). How Modern UI card margins apply is estimated from constants in the source
- Scaling = max(1, target capital height ÷ (14 px font × 0.638 capital ratio × pixel pitch)). Target capital height = 60 cm × tan(20 arcminutes), from Japan’s health-ministry guidance. The capital ratio is Consolas’s font-file value (1307/2048); other fonts change the result
- The table’s scaling is the need rounded up to the smallest of 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 225, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500% (this guide’s assumption, not verified against Windows’ own rules). Examples: 27-inch 1440p 168% → 175%; 27-inch 4K 252% → 300%
- Pixel pitch comes from each maker’s official specs (screen size ÷ pixel count): 27-inch 4K 0.1554 mm, 1440p 0.2331 mm, 1080p 0.3114 mm
- Columns = floor((screen width in px ÷ scaling − left/right UI bands − gutter) ÷ character advance). Advance = 14 px × 1126/2048; gutter = 19 px line height + 5 digits of advance + 26 px. Side bar and minimap closed, line numbers up to 5 digits; the side bands range from 62 px (classic) to 70 px (Modern UI)
- Distance cutoffs are rounded down to one decimal (for example, 250% is enough up to 59.6 cm on a 27-inch 4K). ‘Pixel under 1 arcminute’ uses ITU-R BT.1845’s 1 arcminute
- Lines were not counted on real screens. Mac line counts are omitted because Menlo’s dimensions were not confirmed
