- Does MagSafe or Qi2 charging lose more than a cable?
- Is charging slower when you use the cable and the magnet at once?
Over a cable, if you only top up about half the battery in the evening, 5,000mAh is enough for an iPhone 18 Pro. To go from 0% to 100%, choose 10,000mAh. A Pro Max is just barely covered either way.
In this calculation, all figures are for charging over a cable, with 60-70% of the energy reaching the iPhone (conversion efficiency). Magnetic charging on the back of the phone (MagSafe, Qi2; “magnetic” below) gets less.
The magnetic picks follow the wired estimates for an iPhone 18 Pro: 5,000mAh for an evening top-up and 10,000mAh from empty.
Over a cable, an iPhone 18 Pro gets about 38% more than it needs even on the pessimistic side (about 5.9Wh with 10,000mAh). Magnetic charging loses an unknown amount, so a full charge isn’t guaranteed.
For a Pro Max, get a wired 10,000mAh bank. The picks are listed below.
What each size adds, by model
Charging from 0% over a cable at 60-70% efficiency, here is what each size adds.
| Model | What 5,000mAh adds (from 0%) | What 10,000mAh adds (from 0%) |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro (4,056mAh) | About 69-92% (not a full charge) | About 1.3-1.8 charges |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max (5,391mAh) | About 52-69% (not a full charge) | About 1.0-1.3 charges (the first just barely) |
Over a cable at 60-70% efficiency, the size that is enough even on the pessimistic side is shown in the table for each use. Each is the smallest of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000mAh that is enough (a trip means one full charge a day). “Just barely” means it works on the pessimistic side with very little to spare.
| Use | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Evening top-up (half the battery) | 5,000mAh | 5,000mAh (just barely) |
| Peace of mind for a day (one 0% to 100% charge) | 10,000mAh | 10,000mAh (just barely) |
| Trip with hotel charging each night | 10,000mAh | 10,000mAh (just barely) |
| Trip with no outlet for 2 days | 20,000mAh | 20,000mAh (just barely) |
This article’s picks are only 5,000mAh and 10,000mAh. If you need the 20,000mAh row, look elsewhere. The steps near the end work out other battery levels.
How far 5,000mAh gets you
Charging from 0% over a cable at 60-70% efficiency, 5,000mAh can’t fill either phone. It reaches about 69-92% on an iPhone 18 Pro and about 52-69% on a Pro Max.
The 5,000mAh on the label doesn’t all reach the phone. Some of the power turns into heat while charging.
Over a cable, if about 31% or more is left (about 48% or more on a Pro Max), even a pessimistic estimate says 5,000mAh brings the phone back to 100%. These cutoffs are rounded up to whole percentages on the safe side, so the margin is very small; eSIM-only models reportedly have bigger batteries, so leave a little more.
Per EU-label figures in press reports (Apple does not publish mAh), the iPhone 18 Pro is 4,056mAh and the Pro Max 5,391mAh. These are for SIM-tray models. eSIM-only models reportedly have bigger batteries, so the borderline Pro Max verdicts may change.
Per Apple’s US site as of October 2026, video playback is up to 36 hours on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max; it differs by region.
How many charges 10,000mAh gives
Assuming 60-70% efficiency over a cable, 10,000mAh gives about 1.3-1.8 full charges (0% to 100%) to an iPhone 18 Pro and 1.0-1.3 to a Pro Max. On the pessimistic side, the Pro Max’s first full charge has under 10% to spare: just barely.
For a Pro Max, using the phone while charging, or a bank that has aged and holds less, may fall short of one charge.
Assuming one full charge per day, on a trip with hotel charging each night, 10,000mAh works, just barely for a Pro Max. With no outlet for 2 days, choose 20,000mAh, which also just barely covers a Pro Max.
What magnetic charging loses, and what to watch for
Per ELECOM’s column, magnetic (MagSafe, Qi2) charging is less efficient than a cable. In what this article checked, no figure for how much less it delivers was found, so a full charge cannot be promised. For a sure full charge, use a cable with 10,000mAh.
A Pro Max has almost no margin even over a cable, so a 10,000mAh magnetic bank isn’t recommended. Use a cable, or go up one size if you want magnetic.
Per Apple’s specs, the iPhone 18 Pro supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25W, but the magnetic banks recommended here deliver up to 15W wirelessly (makers’ pages).
Per Anker’s product pages, Anker’s older magnetic 10,000mAh bank drops wireless output to 5W while its USB-C port charges another device. For the two magnetic banks recommended here, the pages disagree and this is unconfirmed. If you use both at once, check the specs first.
No official statement about heat was found, so this article doesn’t cover it.

FAQ
Is 5,000mAh enough for an iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Assuming 60-70% efficiency over a cable, it is just barely enough for an evening top-up of half a Pro Max battery. From 0% it reaches only about 52-69%, so pick 10,000mAh to go to 100%.
The battery figure is for SIM-tray models, so an eSIM-only model may change the verdict.
Should I get 5,000mAh or 10,000mAh for an iPhone 18 Pro?
Over a cable, pick 5,000mAh to add half a battery in the evening, or 10,000mAh to go from empty to full. Charging from 0% over a cable at 60-70% efficiency, 5,000mAh can’t fill either phone.

Data and formulas used (for verification)
Method
- Scope: current 5,000 and 10,000mAh power banks (wired and magnetic) from major makers and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max specs as of 2026-10-10. No hands-on tests.
- Usable bank energy (Wh) = rated mAh x cell voltage x conversion efficiency / 1000. iPhone battery energy (Wh) = mAh x battery voltage / 1000. Percent from 0% = usable Wh / battery Wh x 100.
- Verdict uses the unfavorable end (3.6V cell, 60% efficiency, 3.85V phone battery, 0% to 100%): OK if enough there, partial if enough only at the favorable end (3.85V, 70%, 3.6V, 20% to 100%). Percentages and counts “from 0%” use a full 0% to 100% window at both ends.
- The iPhone 18 Pro (4,056mAh) and Pro Max (5,391mAh) batteries are label figures from press reports for EU SIM-tray models (Apple does not publish them). eSIM-only models are reported to be slightly larger but unconfirmed, and many Pro Max verdicts have under 10% margin, so they may change on an eSIM model. Apple publishes video playback times; 36 and 45 hours are US figures (they differ by region).
- An evening top-up is half the battery (the low end, 0.5, of the daily-charge assumption); a full day is one charge from 0%; trip days without an outlet count one charge a day.
- No published figure was found for wireless (MagSafe, Qi2) loss versus wired, so percentages and counts are for wired charging. Wireless gets less.
- Needed amounts are rounded up and usable amounts, percentages and counts rounded down, so the result never errs toward “enough”.
- Magnetic power banks are recommended only for the iPhone 18 Pro, which has 10% or more margin over a cable. The Pro Max has under 10% even over a cable and the magnetic loss is not quantified, so a wired 10,000mAh is recommended (no 20,000mAh magnetic candidate here).
- The 31% and 48% figures round the 5,000mAh full-charge cutoffs up to whole percentages on the safe side: Pro 100 - 10.8 / 15.6156 x 100 = about 30.838%, Pro Max 100 - 10.8 / 20.75535 x 100 = about 47.965%. The Pro Max margin for one 0% to 100% charge on 10,000mAh is 21.6 / 20.75535 - 1 = about 4.07% on the unfavorable side and 26.95 / 19.4076 = about 1.3886 charges (about 38.9% spare) on the favorable side. “Just barely” is the unfavorable-side verdict.
Assumptions
- 60-70% of the energy in Wh (MagGo FAQ cites 30-45% loss). The makers’ 6,000-7,000mAh counts at USB 5V (30-35Wh), a different basis, so this calculation is stricter; it varies with the model, temperature and cable.: 0.65 (0.6–0.7)
- Nominal cell voltage, held between 3.7V (Anker) and 3.85V (Anker MagGo label); the lower 3.6V side is the conservative end.: 3.7 (3.6–3.85)
- No primary source gives a number for wireless vs wired loss, so the article only says wireless is less efficient.: “not found” (0–0)
- Nominal voltage of the device battery, used to turn mAh into Wh for devices that publish only mAh (iPhone, Galaxy, Switch 2). Same 3.6-3.85V span as the bank cell; the high side (more Wh) is the conservative end.: 3.7 (3.6–3.85)
- How much of the battery one charge fills: 20% to 100% (0.8) up to 0% to 100% (1.0). 1.0 is the conservative end.: 0.8 (0.8–1)
- Phone charges per day from the bank. Maps, photos and payments drain more on a trip, so the article assumes the higher side, 1 charge; lighter use is half.: 1 (0.5–1)
- Tablet charges per day. Half a charge for videos on the move is the premise; all-day use is 1.: 0.5 (0.5–1)
- Handheld console charges per day. Consoles drain in a few hours, so 1 charge is the premise; light play is half.: 1 (0.5–1)
- Laptop charges per day. Half a charge for some work on the trip is the premise; all-day use is 1.: 0.5 (0.5–1)

| iPhone 18 Pro, 5,000mAh, Magnetic (MagSafe, Qi2), 20% | △ Wired: about 89-100% (magnetic gets less). No figure for the magnetic loss was found, so a full charge isn’t certain (a cable is). Usable 10.8-13.4Wh ÷ 14.6-15.7Wh battery. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging is less efficient than a cable, (no published figure for how much lower). The older Anker MagGo Power Bank (10K, A1654) drops wireless output to 5W while its USB-C port charges another device (the Slim and Nano recommended here are unconfirmed). The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max charge at up to 25W over MagSafe and Qi2. Usable 21.6-26.9Wh ÷ 19.4-20.8Wh battery. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has almost no margin even over a cable, so magnetic charging may not reach one full charge. Choose a cable, or a size one step up for magnetic (this calculator and the picks stop at 10,000mAh).
