Working from the official requirements as of October 2026, a Windows laptop for programming needs at least 8 GB of RAM if you skip the Android emulator. That’s each tool’s official minimum (8 GB for Docker and Android Studio) rounded up to a standard size, separate from Windows 11’s own 4 GB. Docker and Android Studio sit exactly at 8 GB, and the emulator at 16 GB, so all three are borderline.
The official minimums are per app, and running several at once isn’t judged. Only official minimum RAM, free-space figures and Arm support are used; speed and comfort weren’t tested on real hardware and aren’t judged.
Minimum RAM and SSD by type of development
The table rounds each official minimum up to a common laptop RAM and SSD size, and marks the borderline cells.
| Development | RAM | SSD | CPU |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web and WSL2 (VS Code) | 8 GB | 256 GB | Either x64 or Arm |
| Docker | 8 GB (exactly the minimum, borderline) | 256 GB | Either (Docker labels the Arm version Early Access) |
| Visual Studio (.NET and more) | 8 GB | 256 GB (512 GB with every workload) | Either x64 or Arm |
| Visual Studio (Python and data science) | 8 GB | 256 GB (512 GB with every workload) | x64 (Intel or AMD) required |
| Android (no emulator) | 8 GB (exactly the minimum, borderline) | 256 GB | x64 (Intel or AMD) required |
| Android (with emulator) | 16 GB (exactly the minimum, borderline) | 256 GB | x64 (Intel or AMD) required |
“Borderline” means the spare RAM (the rounded-up size minus the minimum) is under 10% of the minimum.

Start at 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD
Per each vendor’s official requirements, the minimum RAM is 8 GB for Docker Desktop, 8 GB for Android Studio, and 16 GB with the emulator. Each official RAM figure is given per app, and none of the pages gives a combined figure. So running several, such as Docker and Android Studio together, isn’t judged here.
With 16 GB of memory in a programming laptop, everything except the Android emulator clears the official minimum with room to spare. With the emulator it’s exactly the minimum, so it’s borderline, and Android Studio recommends 32 GB with the emulator.
Windows 11’s 64 GB minimum plus each dev tool’s official free space fits in 256 GB, counting Visual Studio at its typical 20–50 GB install. A full Visual Studio install, at 274 GB, needs 512 GB. Setups between typical and full, and your own files and Docker images, aren’t calculated.
CPU cores and type, and tools that don’t run on Arm
Per the Visual Studio 2026 system requirements, a quad-core or better CPU is recommended. Per Android Studio’s official requirements, Intel Core N-series and U-series processors aren’t recommended due to insufficient performance. With the emulator, the minimum GPU has 4 GB of VRAM.
Per the makers’ spec pages, two chips both called Ryzen AI 5 differ: the 330 has 4 cores and the 340 has 6 cores. Check the core count on the spec page, not the name.
Android Studio needs an x64 CPU, while VS Code and WSL 2 also run on Windows on Arm. Visual Studio supports Arm64 too, but Python development, data science and other workloads aren’t supported. Before choosing Arm, check the workloads you use against Microsoft’s list.
Per the vendors’ official documentation, Docker calls its Arm build Early Access, but Microsoft says it runs natively, so the two differ.
WSL2 and Docker on Windows 11 Home, and the RAM cap
Per Microsoft’s documentation, WSL 2 works on Windows 11 Home and supports both x64 and Arm64 CPUs.
WSL 2 can use up to 50% of Windows’ memory by default. On a 16 GB laptop that’s 8 GB, and you can change it in .wslconfig.
Docker Desktop’s requirements table lists Windows 11 Enterprise, Pro and Education, version 23H2 or later; Home isn’t listed, and this article hasn’t verified whether Docker Desktop works on Home.
Used or Windows 10 laptops: pick by Windows 11 requirements
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) run only until October 12, 2027. If you buy used, choose a machine that meets Windows 11’s requirements (a compatible 64-bit CPU with 2 cores or more, TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot).
Per Microsoft’s documentation, ESU for businesses and schools runs for up to 3 years after Windows 10’s end of support.
Picks by condition
One pick per condition where a listing qualifies, from Amazon.com. When more than one product checked for this article meets these criteria, the pick is the cheapest. Check prices on the seller site.

- At least 100 ratings and 4 stars or more
Connecting an external monitor at 4K 60 Hz while charging the laptop
A USB-C hub with HDMI at 4K 60 Hz and up to 85 W of PD pass-through.
Sold by UGREEN GROUP LIMITED. Whether the rating count is shared with other models on the listing wasn't checked.
A 1 TB external SSD for a PC
1 TB, USB-C, and the maker lists it as compatible with PC and Mac.
A Windows laptop that meets the emulator’s RAM, SSD and x64 conditions
At least 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of SSD and an x64 CPU. In this calculation, whether its GPU (listed by ASUS as Intel® Arc™ Graphics, with no VRAM figure) meets the emulator’s VRAM condition isn’t judged.
FAQ
How much RAM does a Windows laptop need for programming?
The minimum RAM is 8 GB for Docker Desktop, 8 GB for Android Studio, and 16 GB with the emulator. With 16 GB of memory in a programming laptop, everything except the Android emulator clears the official minimum with room to spare.
With the emulator it’s exactly the minimum, so it’s borderline, and Android Studio recommends 32 GB with the emulator. The official minimums are per app, and running several at once isn’t judged.
Can you program on a laptop with 8 GB of RAM?
Yes. With 8 GB, web development, WSL 2 and Visual Studio meet the official minimum.
Docker and Android Studio (without the emulator) are exactly at the official 8 GB minimum, so it’s borderline. With the Android emulator the minimum is 16 GB, so 8 GB isn’t enough.
VS Code has no official RAM figure, so web development and WSL 2 are judged against Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum. Rounded up to a memory tier, the laptop to buy starts at 8 GB.
Visual Studio’s minimum RAM is 4 GB, and 16 GB is recommended for typical professional solutions.
Is a 256 GB SSD enough for programming?
Windows 11’s 64 GB minimum plus each dev tool’s official free space fits in 256 GB, counting Visual Studio at its typical 20–50 GB install. A full Visual Studio install, at 274 GB, needs 512 GB.
Setups between typical and full, and your own files and Docker images, aren’t calculated.
Can you program on a Snapdragon (Arm) Windows laptop?
Android Studio needs an x64 CPU, while VS Code and WSL 2 also run on Windows on Arm. Visual Studio supports Arm64 too, but Python development, data science and other workloads aren’t supported.
Before choosing Arm, check the workloads you use against Microsoft’s list. Per Android Studio’s official requirements, Windows machines with Arm-based CPUs (such as Snapdragon) aren’t currently supported.
Per the vendors’ official documentation as of October 2026, Docker calls its Arm build Early Access, but Microsoft says it runs natively, so the two differ.
Do WSL2 and Docker work on Windows 11 Home?
WSL 2 works on Windows 11 Home and supports both x64 and Arm64 CPUs. Docker Desktop’s requirements table lists Windows 11 Enterprise, Pro and Education, version 23H2 or later; Home isn’t listed, and this article hasn’t verified whether Docker Desktop works on Home.
What’s the difference between the Ryzen AI 5 330 and 340?
Two chips both called Ryzen AI 5 differ: the 330 has 4 cores and the 340 has 6 cores. Check the core count on the spec page, not the name.

Method
- Memory needed = the official minimum RAM for the chosen kind of development (Docker Desktop for Windows 8 GB, Visual Studio 2026 4 GB, Android Studio 8 GB without the emulator and 16 GB with it). VS Code (web development, WSL 2) has no official RAM figure, so it’s judged against the Windows 11 minimum of 4 GB. Official recommendations (Visual Studio 16 GB, Android Studio 32 GB) aren’t used for the conclusions. Each official figure is given per app and no page gives a combined figure, so running several at once isn’t judged.
- Minimum memory = the smallest of 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB (tiers chosen for this article as common laptop sizes) at or above the memory needed. If the headroom (tier − memory needed) is under 10% of the memory needed, it’s marked borderline (a threshold set for this article).
- SSD needed = Windows 11’s minimum storage 64 GB plus the tool’s official free space (Visual Studio: the top of the typical 20-50 GB, or 210 GB with every feature; Android Studio 8 GB without the emulator and 16 GB with it), rounded up to 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB. Docker Desktop and VS Code publish no free-space figure. Your own files, Docker images and what’s inside WSL aren’t calculated. WSL 2’s default virtual disk size of 1 TB is a cap, not usage.
- x64 or Arm = whether the tool officially runs on Windows on Arm (Snapdragon). Google states Android Studio doesn’t support Windows on Arm (Microsoft Learn’s .NET MAUI page also says the Android emulator needs x64). Visual Studio 2026 supports Windows 11 on Arm64, but some workloads such as Python development and data science aren’t supported there. Docker labels the Arm version of Docker Desktop Early Access, while Microsoft’s Windows on Arm overview says it runs natively (Docker’s label is used). WSL supports x64 and Arm64, and VS Code runs natively on Arm. Windows 10 consumer ESU runs until 2027-10-12 (business and education: up to 3 years after end of support).
- By default WSL 2 can use 50 % of Windows’ memory (changeable in .wslconfig). Speed and comfort weren’t tested on real hardware and aren’t judged.jp or Amazon.com as of October 8, 2026.
- Products (USB-C hubs, an external SSD, and a US laptop) must have 100+ ratings, 4+ stars, a seller that is Amazon or the maker (checked on the seller page’s business name and description), and be new with a model number matching the maker’s spec page (checked October 11, 2026). The hubs’ 4K HDMI at 60 Hz and PD pass-through (Anker 85 W, UGREEN 85 W) and the WD My Passport SSD’s “compatible with PC and Mac” (Windows isn’t named) come from the makers’ spec pages. The Zenbook Duo’s GPU is listed as “Intel® Arc™ Graphics” with no VRAM figure, so whether it meets the emulator GPU condition (4 GB of VRAM) isn’t judged.
