For the October 2026 lineup, the smallest configuration that meets the official minimums is 8 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage. That holds with no Android emulator and up to 1 display. It’s borderline against Android Studio’s 8 GB minimum.
With up to 2 displays, an M5 configuration with 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage meets the official minimums, though it’s borderline with the emulator. With 3 displays you need the M5 Pro chip, and with 4 displays the M5 Max.
This covers the MacBooks Apple sells now, checked as of October 2026, without hands-on testing.

Is the MacBook Neo enough?
The MacBook Neo (8 GB) meets the official minimums only if you skip the Android emulator and use at most 1 display. For Android Studio alone it’s exactly the 8 GB minimum, so it’s borderline. Running Docker Desktop and Android Studio together isn’t assessed, since the official pages give no combined figure.
The Neo has two USB-C ports, one USB 3 and one USB 2. The spec lists DisplayPort support for the USB 3 port.
For iOS work, Xcode has no official RAM figure, so the Neo isn’t judged for it either.
How much RAM and storage to pick
The minimum RAM is 4 GB for Docker Desktop, 8 GB for Android Studio, and 16 GB with the emulator.
With the Android emulator you need at least 16 GB. The standard 16 GB on the Air and the M5 14-inch Pro is exactly that minimum, so it’s borderline; the M5 Pro starts at 24 GB.
Android Studio recommends 32 GB of RAM. That is the largest option with the M5 chip. This article’s checks use the minimum, not the recommendation.
Each Android Virtual Device running at the same time needs about 4 GB of memory. The official pages give no total for several, so running several isn’t assessed.
Storage
Per Docker’s and Android Studio’s official requirements, Android Studio needs 8 GB of free space, 16 GB with the emulator, and recommends 32 GB or more on an SSD. Even the smallest current drive, 256 GB, is above those figures. Space taken by macOS and your own files isn’t calculated.
Chips and external displays
Per Apple’s spec pages, the Neo drives up to 1 display, and the Air and the M5 14-inch Pro drive up to 2 displays. The M5 Pro drives up to 3 displays and the M5 Max up to 4 displays, so 3 or more displays need an M5 Pro or better.
The most memory you can order is 8 GB on the Neo and 32 GB on the Air and the M5 14-inch Pro. The M5 Pro goes to 64 GB and the M5 Max to 128 GB, but only with the higher-core GPU.
Which screen size to pick
For the lightest, pick the Air 13 at 1.23 kg; for a bigger screen, the Air 15 or the Pro 16.
| Model | Screen | Resolution | Weight | External displays | Max RAM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neo | 13.0 in | 2,408 × 1,506 | 1.23 kg | 1 display | 8 GB |
| Air 13 | 13.6 in | 2,560 × 1,664 | 1.23 kg | 2 displays | 32 GB |
| Air 15 | 15.3 in | 2,880 × 1,864 | 1.51 kg | 2 displays | 32 GB |
| Pro 14 M5 | 14.2 in | 3,024 × 1,964 | 1.55 kg | 2 displays | 32 GB |
| Pro 14 M5 Pro | 14.2 in | 3,024 × 1,964 | 1.60 kg | 3 displays | 64 GB |
| Pro 14 M5 Max | 14.2 in | 3,024 × 1,964 | 1.62 kg | 4 displays | 128 GB |
| Pro 16 M5 Pro | 16.2 in | 3,456 × 2,234 | 2.14 kg | 3 displays | 64 GB |
| Pro 16 M5 Max | 16.2 in | 3,456 × 2,234 | 2.15 kg | 4 displays | 128 GB |
The M5 Pro’s 64 GB needs the 20-core GPU, and the M5 Max’s 128 GB the 40-core GPU.
Picks by condition
One pick per condition, from Amazon.com:
- Sold new by Amazon.com, with a configuration that matches Apple’s spec
- At least 100 ratings and 4 stars or more
Among the current models checked, when more than one listing qualifies, the pick is the cheapest one, shipping included.
No Android emulator, up to 1 display
For Android Studio alone it’s exactly the 8 GB minimum, so it’s borderline.
Other colors are separate listings. Whether ratings are pooled was not checked.
With the emulator, up to 2 displays, 1.3 kg or less
It’s exactly the 16 GB emulator minimum, so it’s borderline.
15.3 in screen, with the emulator, up to 2 displays
Also exactly the 16 GB minimum, so borderline.
3 displays and the emulator
Its standard 24 GB is 8 GB above the minimum.
FAQ
Is the MacBook Neo good enough for programming?
For the October 2026 lineup, the smallest-memory configuration, 8 GB, drives up to 1 display. It meets the official minimums only if you skip the Android emulator.
For Android Studio alone it’s exactly the 8 GB minimum, so it’s borderline. Running Docker Desktop and Android Studio together isn’t assessed, since the official pages give no combined figure.
Models that fit are in the picks section.
How much RAM does a MacBook need for programming?
The minimum RAM is 4 GB for Docker Desktop, 8 GB for Android Studio, and 16 GB with the emulator. Android Studio recommends 32 GB of RAM.
That is the largest option with the M5 chip. This article’s checks use the minimum, not the recommendation.
How much RAM does Xcode need for iOS development?
Not judged. Apple’s Xcode system requirements list no RAM figure.
Is 256 GB of storage enough for a programming MacBook?
Android Studio needs 8 GB of free space, 16 GB with the emulator, and recommends 32 GB or more on an SSD. Even the smallest current drive, 256 GB, is above those figures.
Space taken by macOS and your own files isn’t calculated. Docker and Xcode give no official disk figure.
How many external displays can a MacBook run?
Per Apple’s spec pages, on current MacBooks the display count depends on the chip. The M5 drives up to 2 displays, the M5 Pro 3 displays and the M5 Max 4 displays.
The 8 GB configuration drives 1 display.
How long does a MacBook battery last?
Apple’s video playback figures range from 16 hours to 24 hours across current configurations other than the M5 Max, from Apple’s own tests. The M5 Max wasn’t checked.

How this was checked:
Sources: Apple specs for Neo, Air and Pro, and Compare Mac / Android Studio install requirements and Docker Desktop for Mac / Xcode system requirements (Apple)
Method
- Memory needed = the official minimum RAM for the chosen kind of development (Docker Desktop on Mac 4 GB, Android Studio on Mac 8 GB for Studio only and 16 GB with the emulator). Apple lists no RAM figure for Xcode, so memory isn’t judged for it. The official recommendation (Android Studio 32 GB) isn’t used for the conclusions.
- Minimum configuration = the smallest memory tier on Apple’s spec pages at or above the memory needed (Neo 8 GB; Air and 14-inch Pro with M5: 16, 24, 32 GB; M5 Pro: 24, 48, 64 GB; M5 Max from 36 GB). If the headroom (configured memory − memory needed) is under 10% of the memory needed, it’s marked borderline (a threshold set for this article).
- External display counts are Apple’s spec-page maximums (Neo 1, Air 2, Pro with M5 2, M5 Pro 3, M5 Max 4). Weights are from Apple’s spec pages.
- Storage is only compared with Android Studio’s official free-space figures (Studio only 8 GB, with the emulator 16 GB, recommended 32 GB or more on an SSD); space used by macOS and your own files isn’t calculated. Docker Desktop and Xcode publish no disk figure.
- Speed and comfort weren’t tested on real hardware and aren’t judged. Picks are new listings sold by Amazon with 100+ ratings, 4+ stars, and a configuration matching Apple’s specs, cheapest including shipping.
