For the October 2026 lineup, the smallest configuration is 8 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage. That holds with no Lightroom Classic AI features and external displays capped at 1 display. It’s borderline against the 8 GB minimum for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.
With two external displays, or Lightroom Classic’s AI features with up to two, the smallest option is an M5 configuration with 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage. It’s borderline against both the recommended 16 GB or more and Lightroom Classic’s 16 GB for AI features. With 3 displays you need the M5 Pro chip, and with 4 displays the M5 Max.
This covers the MacBooks Apple sells now, checked as of October 2026. Lightroom Classic’s AI features are the ones that process photos with AI. Nothing was tested on real hardware, so speed and comfort aren’t judged.
The smallest config depends on your use and your external displays
The table ignores weight; weight only comes in through the carry option in the tool below. For plain writing, only the number of external displays matters. For photo editing, the pick is the first config, going from Neo to Air to Pro, that meets Adobe’s minimum RAM.
| External displays | Writing only (RAM not judged) | Lightroom Classic (minimum 8 GB) | Photoshop (minimum 8 GB) | Lightroom Classic AI features (16 GB) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 1 display | MacBook Neo, 8 GB / 256 GB, memory not judged | MacBook Neo, 8 GB / 256 GB, borderline | MacBook Neo, 8 GB / 256 GB, borderline | 13-inch MacBook Air (M5), 16 GB / 512 GB, borderline |
| 2 displays | 13-inch MacBook Air (M5), 16 GB / 512 GB, memory not judged | 13-inch MacBook Air (M5), 16 GB / 512 GB | 13-inch MacBook Air (M5), 16 GB / 512 GB | 13-inch MacBook Air (M5), 16 GB / 512 GB, borderline |
| 3 displays | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro), 24 GB / 1 TB, memory not judged | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro), 24 GB / 1 TB | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro), 24 GB / 1 TB | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro), 24 GB / 1 TB |
| 4 displays | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Max), 36 GB / 2 TB, memory not judged | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Max), 36 GB / 2 TB | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Max), 36 GB / 2 TB | 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Max), 36 GB / 2 TB |
“Borderline” means the spare RAM (the configuration’s RAM minus the minimum) is under 10% of the minimum. Per Adobe’s official requirements, each official figure is for that app on its own. A figure for running Lightroom Classic and Photoshop together wasn’t found in Adobe’s requirements, so this article doesn’t judge it.
Only the maximum display count was checked, not resolution or refresh rate combinations.
Minimum MacBook configuration for blogging
Pick what you do (writing only, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, or AI features), how much you carry it and how many external displays you use. It rounds Adobe's official memory figures up to Apple's memory tiers, shows the lightest configuration that fits, and suggests one MacBook you can buy.

Is the MacBook Neo enough?
The MacBook Neo (8 GB) is exactly at the 8 GB minimum for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, so it’s borderline. It doesn’t meet the recommendation (16 GB or more) or the 16 GB listed for the AI features, and it drives only 1 display.
Per Apple’s spec pages, the 256 GB Neo has no Touch ID, while the 512 GB model has a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID.
How much RAM and storage to pick
Lightroom Classic and Photoshop for Mac need at least 8 GB of RAM, with 16 GB or more recommended. For Lightroom Classic’s AI features, Adobe lists 16 GB of unified memory. On these Macs the RAM and the GPU share that one unified memory, so the figure is the same RAM, not extra.
Lightroom Classic needs 8 GB of free space and Photoshop 10 GB, with 100 GB recommended for Photoshop. Even the smallest current drive, the Neo’s 256 GB, is above those figures. Space taken by macOS and your photos isn’t calculated.
Keyboard and SD card
Per Apple’s US spec pages, the keyboard is ANSI with 78 keys, or ISO with 79, and both have 12 full-height function keys. Retail listings can differ, so check the layout on the one you buy.
Per Apple’s spec pages, an SDXC card slot appears on the MacBook Pro spec page, but not on the Air or Neo spec pages.
Weight and screen size
Taking 1.3 kg as the limit for daily carry, only the Neo and the 13-inch Air fit, both at 1.23 kg. If you need 16 GB, that’s the 13-inch Air, and nothing this light drives three or more external displays.
| Model | Screen | Resolution | Weight | External displays | Web browsing | Ports |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neo | 13.0 in | 2,408 × 1,506 | 1.23 kg | 1 display | 11 hours | 1 × USB 3, 1 × USB 2 |
| Air 13 | 13.6 in | 2,560 × 1,664 | 1.23 kg | 2 displays | 15 hours | 2 × Thunderbolt 4 |
| Air 15 | 15.3 in | 2,880 × 1,864 | 1.51 kg | 2 displays | 15 hours | 2 × Thunderbolt 4 |
| Pro 14 M5 Pro | 14.2 in | 3,024 × 1,964 | 1.60 kg | 3 displays | 14 hours | Thunderbolt, HDMI |
Web browsing is Apple’s maximum time from its own tests. The Neo’s USB 3 port can output video.
Picks by condition
One pick per condition, from Amazon.com:
- Sold new by Amazon.com, with a configuration that matches Apple’s spec
- At least 100 ratings and 4 stars or more
- Exception: for 4 displays, no listing has 100 ratings yet, so the rating-count rule is waived for the one sold new by Amazon.com (its count is on the card)
Prices vary, so check them on the retailer’s page.
Writing only, or photo editing with the 8 GB minimum, no Lightroom Classic AI features, up to 1 display
It’s exactly at the 8 GB minimum, so it’s borderline. In this calculation, it falls short of Adobe’s recommended 16 GB or more.
Other colors are separate listings. Whether ratings are pooled was not checked.
Recommended 16 GB or more, Lightroom Classic AI features, up to 2 displays, 1.3 kg or less
It’s exactly at the 16 GB for the AI features, so it’s borderline.
3 displays external displays and Lightroom Classic’s AI features
Its standard 24 GB leaves 8 GB of room over the 16 GB for the AI features.
4 displays external displays
It’s the M5 Max with its smallest memory, 36 GB.
It has only 33 ratings so far.
FAQ
Is the MacBook Neo enough for just writing a blog?
For the October 2026 lineup, writing alone has no official memory figure, so this article doesn’t judge memory for it. Any current model is a candidate, and the choice comes down to external displays and weight.
Models that fit are in the picks section.
Can the MacBook Neo handle blog photo editing?
For the October 2026 lineup, the smallest-memory configuration, 8 GB, is exactly at the 8 GB minimum for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, so it’s borderline. It doesn’t meet the recommendation (16 GB or more) or the 16 GB listed for the AI features, and it drives only 1 display.
Photoshop’s AI features aren’t judged. Matching models are listed under Picks by condition.
How much RAM does a MacBook need for blogging and photo editing?
Lightroom Classic and Photoshop for Mac need at least 8 GB of RAM, with 16 GB or more recommended. For Lightroom Classic’s AI features, Adobe lists 16 GB of unified memory.
On these Macs the RAM and the GPU share that one unified memory, so the figure is the same RAM, not extra. Among Apple’s current MacBooks as of October 2026, the lightest one that meets the recommended 16 GB or more weighs 1.23 kg.
It has the M5 chip and the standard 16 GB. That’s exactly the low end of the recommendation, so it’s borderline.
This article’s minimum configurations use the minimum, not the recommendation.
What keyboard layout and SD card slot do MacBooks have?
Per Apple’s US spec pages, the keyboard is ANSI with 78 keys, or ISO with 79, and both have 12 full-height function keys. Retail listings can differ, so check the layout on the one you buy.
On current MacBooks, an SDXC card slot appears on Apple’s spec pages for the 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch models, but not on the 13-inch or 15-inch models.
How many external displays can a MacBook run?
Per Apple’s spec pages, on current MacBooks the display count depends on the chip. The M5 drives up to 2 displays, the M5 Pro 3 displays and the M5 Max 4 displays.
The 8 GB configuration drives 1 display.

Method
- Memory needed = Adobe’s official figure for the chosen use (Lightroom Classic for Mac minimum 8 GB, Photoshop minimum 8 GB, and the 16 GB of unified memory Adobe lists in the recommended column for Lightroom Classic’s AI features such as Denoise). Writing alone has no official figure, so memory isn’t judged for it. Photoshop’s macOS table gives no memory figure for AI features (No memory figure for AI features in the macOS table (RAM: 8 GB minimum, 16 GB or more recommended)). The official recommendations (Lightroom Classic 16 GB, Photoshop 16 GB) aren’t used for the minimum configuration; the lightest configuration that meets them is shown separately.
- Minimum configuration = the smallest memory tier on Apple’s spec pages at or above the memory needed (Neo 8 GB; Air and 14-inch Pro with M5: 16, 24, 32 GB; M5 Pro: 24, 48, 64 GB; M5 Max from 36 GB). Models that meet the display count and weight limit are checked in the order Neo → 13-inch Air → 15-inch Air → Pro, and the first one is shown (the calculation confirms it’s also the lightest that fits). If the headroom (configured memory − memory needed) is under 10% of the memory needed, it’s marked borderline (a threshold set for this article).
- External display counts are Apple’s spec-page maximums (Neo 1, Air 2, Pro with M5 2, M5 Pro 3, M5 Max 4). Weights are from Apple’s spec pages (Neo 1.23 kg, 13-inch Air 1.23 kg, 15-inch Air 1.51 kg, 14-inch Pro with M5 1.55 kg). The carrying limits (1.3 kg daily, 1.7 kg sometimes) are this article’s own choices.
- Storage is only compared with Adobe’s official free-space figures (Lightroom Classic 8 GB, Photoshop 10 GB minimum and 100 GB recommended); space used by macOS, photos and catalogs isn’t calculated. SD card slots are compared from Apple’s spec pages in Japan and the US (Pro: SDXC card slot; Air: No SD card slot listed (MagSafe 3, two Thunderbolt 4, headphone jack); Neo: No SD card slot listed (one USB 3, one USB 2, headphone jack)).
- Speed and comfort weren’t tested on real hardware and aren’t judged. Picks are new listings sold by Amazon with 100+ ratings, 4+ stars, and a configuration matching Apple’s specs, cheapest including shipping. For 4 external displays (M5 Max), no listing has 100 ratings yet, so the rating-count rule is waived for the new listing sold by Amazon.com (its count is on the card).
