Choose a 13.3–14-inch display for A5 at actual size, and a 21.5–23.8-inch one for A4. Pen display size follows the size of the paper you draw on.
A4 at actual size fits a 21.5–23.8-inch display; only one 15.4–16-inch model fits, borderline, with 5 mm to spare. This compares drawing-area dimensions, excluding app panels. It uses official figures as of October 2026, with no hands-on testing.
Which size class fits your paper
Choose a 13.3–14-inch display for A5 at actual size, and a 21.5–23.8-inch one for A4. The table below compares paper and active-area sides geometrically, leaving out app UI panels and 1:1 settings. Paper sizes are ISO, not US Letter. Assumptions: paper long/short sides vs. the active area’s long/short sides (maker figures). Turning the display portrait gives the same result
| Paper | 13.3–14-inch | 15.4–16-inch | 21.5–23.8-inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| A5, 148 × 210 mm | ✓ Whole page fits | ✓ Whole page fits | ✓ Whole page fits |
| A4, 210 × 297 mm | △ Some fit the long side (by display size) | △ Only one model fits (5 mm to spare, borderline) | ✓ Whole page fits |
| A3, 297 × 420 mm | ✕ Long side doesn’t fit | ✕ Long side doesn’t fit | △ Long side only |
“Whole page fits” means one page fits at actual size on every surveyed model in that size class. In this calculation, “Only one model fits” means the rest of that class fall short on the short side.
A3 (297 × 420 mm) doesn’t fit whole at actual size even on a 21.5–23.8-inch display, whose short side is 267.4–296 mm against A3’s 297 mm. Scaled to 90% it fits.
Scaled to 90%, A3 leaves only about 0.1 mm of room on the tightest model, so it’s borderline. Scaling down means drawing smaller than the paper.
A 13.3–14-inch display can’t hold a whole A4 page at actual size. Scaled to 78% it fits, but the room is only about 1.4 mm on the tightest model, so it’s borderline.
Pick your paper and connection to see a matching pen display, if any.

How to check the drawing area
Compare both sides of your paper with the display’s active area, not its inch size. Among models on sale from Wacom, XPPen and HUION, the two differ, and the active area is on the spec sheet.
- Decide the size of your paper
- Read the long and short sides of the active area from the spec sheet
- If both of the paper’s sides are no larger than the active area’s, the whole page fits
For A4 on a 15.4–16-inch display, check the short side first.
Pixel pitch sets how fine the screen looks
A smaller pixel pitch makes lines look smoother. Pixel pitch is the size of one dot on the screen. It varies among the Wacom, XPPen and HUION models on sale.
15.4–16-inch displays with 2560 horizontal pixels have a pixel pitch of about 0.135–0.137 mm, versus about 0.178 mm for 1080p ones, so the 2560-wide screens look finer.
A 21.5–23.8-inch 1080p display has a pixel pitch of about 0.248 mm, coarser than the 2560-wide models (about 0.186–0.206 mm).
Gamut coverage versus area ratio
A gamut is the range of colors a screen can show. Makers state it in two ways, so it helps to know which is which. The figures here are triangle areas and overlaps on the CIE 1931 xy chart.
Some makers list gamut as coverage and others as area ratio. One HUION 13-inch spec sheet lists 99% sRGB coverage and a 120% sRGB area ratio, so the numbers alone can’t be compared.
Coverage is the share of a standard’s area that the screen’s gamut overlaps. Area ratio compares the size of the screen’s gamut with the standard’s.
DCI-P3 has 100.5% of Adobe RGB’s area, but overlaps only 88.2% of it. A ratio over 100% doesn’t mean 100% coverage.
Coverage and ratio measure different things, so this guide never compares one against the other.
For choosing a gamut, see Best monitor for digital art.
One USB-C cable, power and weight
When one USB-C cable works
- On Wacom’s spec sheets, sending video over a single USB-C cable needs a computer whose USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode
- If it isn’t supported, pick a model that connects over HDMI
Whether you need a power adapter
- Among models with published power specs, 21.5–23.8-inch displays are specified to run from a wall power adapter (12 V)
Weight for carrying
- Among models with a published weight, 13.3–14-inch displays weigh 0.75–0.865 kg / 1.7–1.9 lb, 15.4–16-inch ones 1.245–2 kg / 2.7–4.4 lb, and 21.5–23.8-inch ones 3.6–7.3 kg / 7.9–16.1 lb
Picks by condition
Each pick is sold on Amazon.com, one per condition. The conditions:
- Sold new by Amazon or the maker
- The maker’s spec page shows the same model number as the listing
- At least 100 ratings and 4 stars or more
- Not an import
When more than one listing qualifies, the pick is the cheapest among the listings checked, shipping included. Actual-size fit compares drawing-area dimensions, excluding app panels. Check prices on the store.
13.3–14-inch, video over one USB-C cable
At 293.8 mm by 165.2 mm, the active area is enough for A5, and the display weighs 865 g. The spec lists a full-function USB-C port, so your computer’s port needs DisplayPort Alt Mode.
Sold by Huion Official Store. 13.3” and 15.6” sizes and colors share the page. The rating count is shared with other models on the same listing.
15.4–16-inch
A5 fits but A4’s short side does not, with an active area of 350 mm by 197 mm. The screen is 2,560 px by 1,440 px, with a pixel pitch of about 0.137 mm.
21.5–23.8-inch
A4 fits whole at actual size, with an active area of 475.4 mm by 267.4 mm. It weighs 3,600 g and runs on a power adapter.
Sold by HUION. 13.3”, 15.6”, 15.8” and 21.5” models share the page. This is the 21.5”. The rating count is shared with other models on the same listing.
FAQ
What size pen display should I get?
Among models on sale from Wacom, XPPen and HUION, choose a 13.3–14-inch display for A5 at actual size, and a 21.5–23.8-inch one for A4. For other paper sizes, check the table.
What size pen display do I need for A4 art?
Among models on sale from Wacom, XPPen and HUION, A4 at actual size fits a 21.5–23.8-inch display; only one 15.4–16-inch model fits, borderline, with 5 mm to spare. This compares drawing-area dimensions, excluding app panels.
What is the difference between gamut coverage and area ratio?
Coverage is the share of a standard’s area that the screen’s gamut overlaps. Area ratio compares the sizes of the two areas.
On makers’ spec sheets, some makers list gamut as coverage and others as area ratio. One HUION 13-inch spec sheet lists 99% sRGB coverage and a 120% sRGB area ratio, so the numbers alone can’t be compared.
Worked out as triangle areas on the CIE 1931 xy chart, DCI-P3 has 100.5% of Adobe RGB’s area, but overlaps only 88.2% of it. A ratio over 100% doesn’t mean 100% coverage.
Can a pen display connect with one USB-C cable?
Some can. On Wacom’s spec sheets, sending video over a single USB-C cable needs a computer whose USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
The Cintiq 16 needs a separate AC adapter when the computer can’t supply enough power, so DisplayPort Alt Mode support alone doesn’t guarantee a single cable. For other makers, check each model’s spec sheet.
Does a pen display need a power adapter?
Among models with published power specs, 21.5–23.8-inch displays are specified to run from a wall power adapter (12 V). Smaller classes are mostly specified to run on power from the computer’s USB-C port.
Some models need a separate AC adapter when the computer can’t supply enough.
Can I carry a pen display around?
Among models with a published weight, 13.3–14-inch displays weigh 0.75–0.865 kg / 1.7–1.9 lb, 15.4–16-inch ones 1.245–2 kg / 2.7–4.4 lb, and 21.5–23.8-inch ones 3.6–7.3 kg / 7.9–16.1 lb. How they carry is unknown; nothing was tried hands-on.
Data and formulas used (for verification)
How this was checked: Active area, resolution, connection, power and weight come from the makers’ official specs as of October 2026. Nothing was tested hands-on. Active areas and paper were compared long side to long side and short side to short side, geometrically. App UI panels and 1:1 display settings are not included. Pixel pitch is the active-area width divided by horizontal pixels. Official pixel pitch: Wacom (0.1346 mm). Model with the least room when A3 is scaled down: HUION Kamvas 22 (Gen 3). Paper sizes: ISO 216 table (University of Cambridge). Active area, resolution, connection, power and weight: official spec pages from Wacom, XPPen, XPPen (English) and HUION. Coverage and ratio definitions: EIZO Library and BenQ.
Method
- Active area: each maker’s official spec page (Wacom’s display size and active area, XPPen’s working/active area, HUION’s active area). Paper is ISO 216 A-series (A6 105 × 148 mm, A5 148 × 210 mm, A4 210 × 297 mm, A3 297 × 420 mm).
- Fit: paper long side vs. active-area long side, and short side vs. short side. Both fit = whole page fits; only the long side = long side only. Turning the display portrait gives the same result.
- Scale to fit = the smaller of the long-side ratio and the short-side ratio, rounded down to 1% so it works for every model in the size group (A3 on large displays: 90%).
- Pixel pitch = active-area width ÷ horizontal pixels. It differs from Wacom’s published pitch (0.1346 mm and others) by less than 0.0002 mm.
- Gamut: makers’ figures are grouped as coverage, area ratio, both, or unlabeled, and not compared number to number. What the standards mean is worked out from the sRGB, Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 primaries on the CIE 1931 xy chart (ratio = area ÷ area, coverage = overlap ÷ the standard’s area; e.g. DCI-P3 is 100.5% of Adobe RGB by ratio but covers 88.2%).
- Connection: a model counts for HDMI if its official connection specs list HDMI (including Mini-HDMI), and for one USB-C cable if they list a video-capable USB-C input (full-function USB-C, DisplayPort Alt Mode and the like). The HDMI end of 3-in-1 cables isn’t listed in the connection specs, so it isn’t counted.
- For models with no stated active area (Wacom One 14), the official display size of 309×174 mm was used as the drawing area.
- Weight and power are makers’ official figures; whether weight includes a stand varies by model. Eye-to-screen distance isn’t covered: there’s no primary source for drawing posture.
- No units were tested. Picks: new on Amazon, 100+ ratings, 4+ stars, no strong Sakura Checker warning, sold by Amazon or the maker’s own store, listing model matched to the spec model, cheapest with shipping.
