For an 8- to 15-hour flight, 128GB or more of built-in storage holds 15 hours even in High (HD) quality. On 64GB, 15 hours in High may not fit, and in Standard (SD) even 32GB holds 15 hours. These are estimates from Netflix’s maximum data of 3 GB per hour in High (1 GB in Standard), and the system’s share is an assumption.
Storage table by hours watched and quality
The numbers in the table are estimates, since download file sizes aren’t published. Storage per hour uses Netflix’s maximum streaming data instead, so it isn’t a cap on real saved size. Standard is 1 GB per hour and High is 3 GB per hour.
After you download, check the real size and free space in your device’s storage settings.
The system takes space too. This guide assumes 10–15 GB on a 32GB tablet, 15–20 GB on 64GB and 20–30 GB on 128GB or more, and the rest is free for video. microSD isn’t counted (see the microSD section below).
| Hours watched | Quality | Space needed (estimate) | 32GB | 64GB | 128GB | 256GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 hours (2 films) | Standard (SD) | 4 GB | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| 4 hours (2 films) | High (HD, up to 1080p) | 12 GB | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| 8 hours (4 films) | Standard (SD) | 8 GB | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| 8 hours (4 films) | High (HD, up to 1080p) | 24 GB | Not enough free space | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| 12 hours (6 films) | Standard (SD) | 12 GB | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| 12 hours (6 films) | High (HD, up to 1080p) | 36 GB | Not enough free space | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| 15 hours | Standard (SD) | 15 GB | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| 15 hours | High (HD, up to 1080p) | 45 GB | Not enough free space | Depends on system space | Fits | Fits |
“Fits” means it fits even when the system takes the most space in the assumed range.
“Depends on system space” means it fits if the system takes less. “Not enough free space” means it doesn’t fit even then, so switch to Standard or pick a size that shows “Fits.”
On a 64GB tablet, 15 hours in High (45 GB) stops fitting once the system takes more than 19 GB.
Here’s how many hours each size holds (estimates):
| Storage | Hours in High | Hours in Standard |
|---|---|---|
| 32GB | about 5.6–7.3 hours | about 17–22 hours |
| 64GB | about 14.6–16.3 hours | about 44–49 hours |
| 128GB | about 32.6–36 hours | about 98–108 hours |
If you’ll watch only 2 or 3 films, that is up to 6 hours at 2 hours each, or 18 GB in High quality, which 64GB or more holds. On 32GB, 2 films in High take 12 GB and fit even in the worst case, but a third takes 18 GB and may not. In Standard, 8 films fit even in the worst case.
How to check your own flight
- Add up the hours you’ll watch on the way out and back. Count a film as 2 hours.
- Pick a quality. If you’re unsure, plan for High so you don’t run short.
- Enter the hours, quality and screen size in the calculator below.
Example: 7 hours out and 8 back in High is 15 hours x 3 GB = 45 GB. The 128GB row shows “Fits,” so pick 128GB or more.
Calculate how much tablet storage your flight's videos need
Pick how long you'll watch on the plane and the quality. It shows the space your downloads need and which of 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB holds them. Pick a screen size to see the pick in that size and its built-in storage. Sizes use Netflix's maximum data per hour, minus an assumed amount for the system.

The smallest size in a “Fits” row is the one to aim for.
Download limits and expiry on streaming apps
Per each service’s official help pages as of October 2026, on Netflix’s ad-supported plans, downloads are limited to 15 per device per calendar month. Fifteen hours of TV at 30–60 minutes an episode is 15–30 episodes, which reaches or passes the limit. Fifteen hours of films at 2 hours each is about 8 titles, so it fits, and ad-free plans allow 100 at a time, enough either way.
Downloads expire, and the rules differ by service.
- Netflix: downloads expire after a set period. The official help pages checked here don’t state the number of days.
- Prime Video: you typically have 30 days after downloading to start a title, and 48 hours after starting to finish it. Downloads work on up to 2 devices at a time.
- YouTube: with Premium, downloads stay watchable for up to 29 days.
- Disney+: the official help pages checked here don’t give the rules.
Netflix downloads come in two qualities: Standard (SD) and High, which is HD up to 1080p. On Android and Fire tablets without HD support the setting can’t be changed, so if you want High-quality downloads, check HD support first.
Can a microSD card add storage?
Per the makers’ official specifications, tablets with a microSD slot can add storage, but whether streaming apps can save downloads to the card is unconfirmed. The storage math here uses built-in storage only.
No iPad has a microSD slot. The Fire tablets checked take cards up to 1TB and the Galaxy Tab models checked up to 2TB. Some Android tablets have no slot.
Weight, size and battery
Per the makers’ official specifications, among tablets listed on Amazon.com, 8- to 9-inch models are the light choice for holding on the plane at 293–337g (10.3–11.9oz). The lightest 10- to 11-inch model weighs 433.6g (15.3oz). That is 96.6g (3.4oz) more than the heaviest 8- to 9-inch one.
On tablets listed on Amazon.com, the long side is about 7.7–8.3 inches on 8- to 9-inch models and 9.7–10.6 inches on 10- to 11-inch ones (195–211 and 246–269mm). All fit within an A4 sheet, 8.3 x 11.7 inches (210 x 297mm). Sizes exclude any case.
On an 11-inch iPad, a 16:9 film shown without cropping covers about 1.6 times the area it does on an 8.3-inch iPad mini. If two people share one tablet, go bigger.
If you’ll watch video for 15 hours straight, some tablets won’t last on one charge. Makers’ official video playback times are 10 hours for every iPad and 12–21 hours for the other brands sold on Amazon.com. They aren’t measured the same way, though (Amazon’s Fire figure mixes reading and music, and Lenovo uses its own lab test), so this article doesn’t sort tablets by battery life.
Seat power and USB ports can be missing depending on the aircraft and seat. Rules for power banks on a plane are in a separate guide.
Picks by need
Picks are the cheapest product that meets each need among those checked here, with 100 or more reviews, 4.0 stars or higher, and Amazon or the maker as seller. Prices change, so check the store page. No real device was tested.
Both picks assume High-quality Netflix downloads and a working YouTube app. This guide has no Standard-only pick.
Per Netflix Help, among the tablets checked here, only iPads and Fire tablets are listed for 1080p High quality. Android models are left out of the High-quality picks because their Netflix HD support couldn’t be confirmed from the maker or Netflix’s lists.
The Fire tablets checked support up to 1080p, but whether the official YouTube app works on them couldn’t be confirmed from official pages, so they aren’t picks here. The Fire HD 8 and HD 10 checked here top out at 64GB, so 15 hours in High (45 GB) depends on how much the system takes.
Two or three films, light in the hand
Three films (6 hours) in High take 18 GB, which fits in its built-in storage.
The rating count is shared with other models on the same listing.
15 hours saved in High, or two people sharing one screen
15 hours in High is 45 GB, which fits in its built-in storage. The screen is 11-inch class. The 15-hour pick and the two-viewer pick came out the same, so they’re combined.
The rating count is shared with other models on the same listing.
FAQ
How many GB of tablet storage do I need for a 15-hour flight?
128GB or more holds 15 hours even in High quality. 64GB may fall short, and in Standard even 32GB is enough.
This is an estimate from Netflix’s maximum data of 3 GB per hour in High (1 GB in Standard) with an assumed system share, so other apps may differ.
Is a 32GB or 64GB tablet enough?
In Standard, even 32GB holds 15 hours. In High, 32GB holds about 5.6–7.3 hours and 64GB about 14.6–16.3 hours.
These are estimates from Netflix’s maximum data of 3 GB per hour in High (1 GB in Standard) with an assumed system share, so other apps may differ.
Can a microSD card add storage for downloads?
Per the makers’ official specifications as of October 2026, tablets that support microSD can add storage, but whether streaming downloads can be saved to the card is unconfirmed. Some tablets have a slot and some don’t, and the storage math here uses built-in storage only.
Is there a limit on Netflix downloads?
Ad-supported plans allow 15 downloads per device per month, and ad-free plans up to 100 on a device at a time. Fifteen hours of TV can reach the ad-supported limit.
Can you finish a Prime Video title on the flight home if you start it on the way out?
On Prime Video, a title you start on the outbound flight typically stops playing 48 hours after you start it. If you plan to finish it on the way home, you may need to download it again before you return.

Data and formulas used (for verification)

How this was checked: Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube help pages and the makers’ official specs (storage, microSD, weight, size, screen) were checked as of October 2026. Disney+‘s rules couldn’t be confirmed. Nothing was tested on a real device. Netflix help: downloads. Prime Video help: downloads. YouTube help: offline playback. Space needed is hours watched times storage per hour, an estimate. Free space is the advertised storage minus an assumed system reserve.
Method
- Covers each service’s official help pages (Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube) and the makers’ official specs (storage, microSD, weight, screen) as of 2026-10-14. Nothing was tested on real devices.
- Space needed = hours you watch x storage per hour. Download file sizes aren’t published, so storage per hour uses Netflix’s maximum streaming data (Standard = SD 1GB, High = HD 3GB) (an assumption standing in for download size, not a limit on real saved size).
- Usable space = advertised storage - space for the system (assumed 10-15GB on 32GB, 15-20GB on 64GB, 20-30GB on 128GB or more). Yes if it fits even with the largest reserve, maybe if it fits only with the smallest, and not enough free space if it doesn’t fit even then. On a 64GB tablet, 15 hours in High (45GB) fits if the system takes 19GB or less, and does not above that.
- microSD isn’t counted, because official statements on saving streaming downloads to a card weren’t checked.
- Battery is not sorted into lasts or doesn’t last 15 hours: the makers measure video playback under different conditions, and few publish the battery’s Wh.
- Because the picks assume High-quality downloads, they are limited to models where Netflix Help confirms 1080p (iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 2nd generation and later). Android models were left out because their Netflix HD support could not be confirmed from primary sources, and Fire tablets because the official YouTube app could not be confirmed. Films are counted at 2 hours each (checked across 1.5-2.5 hours).
- Weight, size and battery ranges cover tablets with a new listing on Amazon.com whose weight and size aren’t sourced only from a Japanese page. Weight: among 8- to 9-inch tablets (screen under 9.5 inches) the lightest is the iPad mini (A17 Pro) at 293g and the heaviest is the Fire HD 8 at 337g (Amazon product page, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CVDN4QS6). Among 10- to 11-inch tablets (9.5-11.6 inches) the lightest is the Fire HD 10 (2023) at 433.6g (Amazon product page, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BHZT5S12). 433.6 - 337 = 96.6g. The iPad figures come from Apple’s Japan spec pages (for example https://www.apple.com/jp/ipad-mini/specs/); the same models are sold in the US. Some Samsung figures come from its UK and India pages. Other values are in research/sku_specs.json (each maker’s official pages). Cases are not included.
- Dimensions: the long side of the body is 195.4mm (iPad mini) to 211mm (Galaxy Tab A 8.7-inch) for 8- to 9-inch tablets, and 246mm (Fire HD 10) to 268.3mm (Lenovo Tab Plus 11.5-inch) for 10- to 11-inch ones. Compared with an A4 sheet (210 x 297mm, 8.3 x 11.7 inches).
- Video playback time: the makers’ official figures. Every iPad is 10 hours (Wi-Fi web use and video playback, Apple’s iPad spec pages). Other makers sold on Amazon.com range from 12 hours (Lenovo Idea Tab 11-inch and Tab Plus 11.5-inch, Lenovo’s own lab tests, PSREF) to 21 hours (Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+, Samsung’s official page). Amazon’s Fire figure mixes reading, web, video and music. The conditions are not the same across makers.
- Screen area: compares the iPad mini (A17 Pro, 8.3-inch, 2266 x 1488, 326ppi) and the iPad (A16, 11-inch, 2360 x 1640, 264ppi) with a 16:9 film shown whole, without cropping (screen size = resolution / ppi, film scaled to the largest size that fits). The iPad (A16) is about 29,001mm2 and the iPad mini about 17,534mm2, a ratio of about 1.65. The article rounds down to about 1.6 times.
Assumptions
- Storage per hour for Netflix’s Standard (SD) download. Netflix’s help pages don’t give download file sizes, so this uses the maximum streaming data per hour for SD (up to 1GB, netflix_data_per_hour_gb). This is an assumption that stands in for download size, not a limit on real saved size.
- Storage per hour for Netflix’s High download (up to 1080p). For the same reason it uses the streaming HD ceiling (up to 3GB per hour). Downloads top out at 1080p, so the 4K figure (7GB) isn’t used.
- On a 32GB tablet, space taken by the system and preinstalled apps (including the gap between the advertised and the shown capacity). No per-model official figure was found, so it is a range. Your own photos and apps aren’t included.: 12 (10–15)
- Same as above, for a 64GB tablet.: 18 (15–20)
- Same as above, for tablets with 128GB or more.: 25 (20–30)
- Length of one film. It varies, so 1.5-2.5 hours.: 2 (1.5–2.5)
- Length of one TV episode. It varies, so 30-60 minutes.: 0.75 (0.5–1)
