For a Windows PC and a phone, the Sony WF-1000XM6 and Sony WF-1000XM5 are the models whose official pages cover all five things to check. For an iPhone and a Mac, this guide’s pick is the AirPods Pro 3, which switch between the two by themselves. Apple’s pages don’t mention their wind-noise measures or how their call noise reduction works.
This guide is based on the official pages of the major makers (Sony, Bose, Google, Anker, Technics and Apple). No earbuds were tested in person, so how the mics sound isn’t compared. The battery math uses assumed values.
- ANC (active noise cancellation): reduces the surrounding noise you hear
- Ambient mode: lets outside sound in through the earbuds
- Multipoint: one pair of earbuds connected to several devices at once. Most models take 2; Technics takes up to 3
- HFP: the Bluetooth call profile, which is mono
- LE Audio: the newer Bluetooth standard, which can keep stereo during calls
Commute and calls at a glance
Five things decide whether one pair can do both, and they are the table’s columns, as listed on the official pages in October 2026.
The Technics EAH-AZ80 and EAH-AZ100 are limited to 2 devices when LDAC is used. The Sony WF-1000XM6 battery figure is with AAC.
| Model | Battery with ANC on | Ambient mode | Wind-noise measures | Multipoint | Call noise reduction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony WF-1000XM6 | 8 h (5 h talk, case total not found) | Yes (can make wind noise louder) | Mic built to reduce wind noise | 2 devices | 2 mics per side, bone-conduction sensor and AI |
| Sony WF-1000XM5 | 8 h (6 h talk, 24 h with case) | Yes | Mic built to reduce wind noise (micro-perforated) | 2 devices (not with LE Audio prioritized) | Multiple mics, AI and bone-conduction sensor |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) | Up to 6 h (whether ANC is on isn’t confirmed) | Yes (Aware Mode) | SpeechClarity (blocks wind in calls) | 2 devices | SpeechClarity (mic count not found) |
| Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 | 8 h (30 h with case) | Yes | Wind-blocking mesh covers | Yes (off by default; turn on in the app) | Method not found (3 mics per side) |
| Anker Soundcore Liberty 5 | 8 h (32 h with case, read from Anker’s comparison table) | Yes | Not found | 2 devices | 6 mics plus AI (no explanation found) |
| Technics EAH-AZ80 | 7 h (24 h with case) | Yes | Not found | 3 devices | JustMyVoice (reduces noise in outgoing call audio) |
| Technics EAH-AZ100 | 10 h (28 h with case) | Yes | Not found | 3 devices (not with LE Audio prioritized) | Voice Focus AI (reduces noise in outgoing and incoming call audio) |
| Apple AirPods Pro 3 | 8 h (24 h with case) | Yes | Not found | Auto-switching between Apple devices (not multipoint) | Voice Isolation (no explanation found) |
“Not found” means the official pages don’t say, so it may or may not be supported. The Bose battery figure doesn’t confirm whether ANC is on.
The Sony WF-1000XM6 and Sony WF-1000XM5 are the models whose official pages cover all five things to check.
Why ANC and call noise reduction are separate
Per Sony as of October 2026, ANC cuts the noise you hear, while your voice goes to the caller through a separate mechanism (mics and AI). Technics and Bose also describe ANC and calls as separate features. The Technics EAH-AZ100’s Voice Focus AI reduces noise in both the voice it sends to the other person and the sound you hear on calls.
ANC can work well on the train, yet the person on the call may still hear the noise around you.
For call noise reduction, check how the earbuds separate your voice from noise, not only the mic count. The table shows which official pages describe the method. Apple lists Voice Isolation and Anker lists 6 mics plus AI, with no explanation; more mics aren’t judged better.
Commute specs: ANC, ambient mode and wind noise
On a commute, ANC cuts the train noise, ambient mode lets you hear station announcements, and wind-noise measures matter on a windy platform.
Per Sony, ambient sound mode can make wind noise louder; if it does, turn ambient sound mode off. On a windy platform, switch it on and off as needed.
Whether you can hear outside sound while on a call wasn’t found on the official pages, so check each model’s own explanation.
Among the models checked, only some models’ official pages describe wind-noise measures, as the table shows. Nothing was found for the others.
Specs for work calls
Multipoint
Per the makers’ official pages, multipoint keeps your phone and work PC connected at once, but only one plays audio at a time. Most models take 2 devices, and the two Technics models take up to 3 (2 with LDAC). On Sony models, a call rings in the earbuds, and Sony and Bose describe replacing an existing connection when a third device connects.
The Apple AirPods Pro 3 switch automatically between an iPhone and a Mac on the same Apple Account, which is why they’re listed. Apple’s pages don’t mention wind-noise measures or how call noise reduction works. This isn’t Bluetooth multipoint, and using them with a Windows PC at the same time wasn’t checked.
Why audio gets worse on a Windows PC
Per Microsoft, over a traditional Bluetooth call connection, using the earbuds’ mic switches a Windows PC to the call profile (HFP) and audio turns mono. That is why PC calls sound worse than music. LE Audio is the exception.
To keep stereo during PC calls, both the PC and the earbuds must support LE Audio, a newer Bluetooth method. The PC needs Windows 11 24H2 or later with factory LE Audio support. No model here officially confirms it, and the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Technics EAH-AZ100 lose multipoint with LE Audio prioritized.
Apple’s support page covers connecting AirPods to non-Apple devices as a Bluetooth headset, and Google’s covers pairing Pixel Buds with computers. Siri is unavailable on AirPods, and Pixel Buds settings are a web app you can use on Windows.
Support in call apps such as Teams and Zoom wasn’t checked on the official pages, so it isn’t covered here.
Does the battery last all day? (an estimate)
Assuming a 60-minute commute each way and 3 hours of meetings, the XM6 uses about 85% of a charge and the XM5 about 75%, so one charge covers the day. With ANC on, the XM6 runs 8 h of music or 5 h of talk, and the XM5 8 h or 6 h. The XM6’s 8 h is with AAC; with LDAC it drops to 5 h (about 100% for this day).
On the longest day (90 minutes each way, 4 hours of meetings), the WF-1000XM6 needs about 118% and the WF-1000XM5 about 104% of a charge. Top up in the case, for example at lunch.
The estimate divides commute hours by ANC-on music time and meeting hours by talk time, then adds the shares. It assumes no charging in the case.
Models that don’t publish talk time aren’t calculated, because dividing meeting hours by music time would be too generous. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) list “up to 6 hours”; whether that is with ANC on couldn’t be confirmed.
How to check your own day
- Count your one-way commute and your meeting hours
- Check whether your PC runs Windows or macOS
- On each model’s official page, look for talk time and the number of multipoint devices
- Enter them in the tool below to see whether the battery lasts and which specs to check

Picks by situation
The Sony WF-1000XM6 and Sony WF-1000XM5 cover all five checks. No Amazon.com listing of them meets this guide’s criteria (4.0 stars or higher, sold by Amazon or the maker).
For an iPhone and a Mac
Per the makers’ official pages, the Apple AirPods Pro 3 switch automatically between an iPhone and a Mac on the same Apple Account, which is why they’re listed. Apple’s pages don’t mention wind-noise measures or how call noise reduction works. This isn’t Bluetooth multipoint, and using them with a Windows PC at the same time wasn’t checked.
FAQ
Can commuting earbuds also handle work calls?
Among the models checked, this guide compares five things to choose one pair for both: battery with ANC on, ambient mode, wind-noise measures, multipoint and call noise reduction. Teams and Zoom support wasn’t checked in this guide, and mic quality wasn’t compared.
Are earbuds with strong noise cancelling also good for calls?
Not necessarily, because they are separate features.
Why does the sound get worse when earbuds connect to a Windows PC?
Per Microsoft as of October 2026, over a traditional Bluetooth call connection, using the earbuds’ mic switches a Windows PC to the call profile (HFP) and audio turns mono. That is why PC calls sound worse than music.
LE Audio is the exception.
Do more mics mean better call quality?
The official pages don’t say that more mics mean better calls. Among the models checked, for call noise reduction, check how the earbuds separate your voice from noise, not only the mic count.
The table shows which official pages describe the method. Apple lists Voice Isolation and Anker lists 6 mics plus AI, with no explanation; more mics aren’t judged better.
Data and formulas used (for verification)
Method
- Covers current earbuds from Sony, Bose, Google, Anker, Technics and Apple as of 2026-10-10, plus Microsoft official pages. No earbuds were tested in person.
- Battery with ANC on, talk time, ambient mode, wind-noise measures, multipoint and call noise reduction are taken as written on each model’s official help or product page. Where nothing was found, the table says Not found; that does not mean the feature is missing.
- Battery is an estimate under assumed commutes (30 to 90 minutes each way, round trip) and meetings (1 to 4 hours): commute hours are divided by ANC-on playback time and meeting hours by talk time, and the shares are added (only for models that publish talk time). Mic quality is not judged.
