Calculated for tablets on Amazon.com, showing one whole page in portrait, Japanese bunko paperbacks (4.1 x 5.8 in) fit on an 8-inch tablet, though 8.0 inches is borderline. B6 manga (5.0 x 7.2 in) needs 10 inches or more; none of the tablets checked shows an A4 PDF at full paper size. US paperback sizes weren’t calculated.
The models covered are tablets listed on Amazon.com as of October 2026 with official screen sizes and resolutions. No tablet was tested in person.
Quick reference by what you read
Find the column for what you read and the row for the screen size. Each percentage is how big one whole page shows in portrait compared with the printed page. 100% means the same size as paper.
The columns are Japanese book sizes plus A4: bunko is the Japanese paperback size, and shinsho and B6 are Japanese manga volume sizes. Measure your own book and compare.
| Novels: bunko paperback, A6, 4.1 x 5.8 in | Manga: shinsho volume, 4.4 x 6.9 in | Manga: B6 volume, 5.0 x 7.2 in | Magazines: B5, 7.2 x 10.1 in | PDFs: A4, 8.3 x 11.7 in |

Screen size for novels and manga
Showing one page in portrait, a bunko page fits at paper size or larger on the 8-inch class, and a B6 manga page on the 10-11-inch class. On the smallest model in each, it is borderline.
Here, sizes are for showing a printed page as it is, one whole page. How much text fits when you change an e-book’s font size is not tested.
On the 8-inch class (8-8.7 in), a bunko page shows at about 102-110% of paper size. The smallest, 8.0 inches, shows it at about 102%, which is borderline. The 10-11-inch class shows it at about 129-151%, larger than the printed book.
A shinsho manga page shows at about 93-101% of paper size on the 8-inch class. That is close to paper size but borderline: an 8.0-inch screen, or a view that keeps the top and bottom bars, shows it slightly smaller.
A B6 manga page shows at about 84-90% on the 8-inch class, smaller than paper. The 10-11-inch class shows it at about 106-123%, at paper size or larger. The smallest, 10.1 inches, is only slightly larger than paper, so borderline.
Reading manga as two-page spreads is covered in what size tablet for manga spreads.
How big a screen PDFs and magazines need
Showing one page in portrait, a whole A4 page shows at about 51-55% of paper size on the 8-inch class and about 64-75% on the 10-11-inch class. Models from 12.9 inches up reach 80% or more; the 13-inch class shows it at about 83-88%. Among the models checked, none shows it at full paper size.
Going by assumed paper text sizes, a whole A4 page on the 8-inch class shows its text much smaller than a bunko paperback’s. On a small screen you zoom in as you read PDFs.
The PDF figures are for A4. US Letter wasn’t calculated.
A B5 magazine page (Japanese JIS B5 size) shows at about 74-87% of paper size on the 10-11-inch class. A 13-inch 4:3 screen shows it at about 98-102%, right at paper size but borderline. A 13-inch 16:10 screen shows about 96%, slightly smaller than paper.
For an A4-size magazine, use the PDF (A4) column of the table.
Portrait or landscape: which is better for reading?
Books that fill one page, such as bunko paperbacks and manga, read best in portrait. For PDFs, turning the tablet sideways and fitting the page width makes the text bigger.
Held sideways, on the 10-11-inch class, fitting the A4 width shows text at about 103-119% of paper size. One screen then holds only about 42-50% of the page, so you scroll as you read.
On an 11-inch screen with a changed aspect ratio, an A4 PDF shows at about 75% of paper size on a 10:7 screen versus about 70% on 16:10. A4, B5, bunko and B6 pages get bigger on screens closer to their own shape, 10:7 to 4:3, while shinsho manga is bigger on 3:2 to 16:10.
Weight difference and eye comfort
Per the makers’ specs as of October 2026, weights run about 293-337 g, or 10.3-11.9 oz, for the 8-inch class. The 10-11-inch class is 433-650 g, or 15.3-22.9 oz, and the 12-13-inch class 530-775 g, or 18.7-27.3 oz. Every 8-inch model is lighter than the lightest 10-11-inch model.
An official comparison of eye strain by screen size alone wasn’t found. Some tablets can warm the screen color at night (Apple’s Night Shift, Samsung’s Eye comfort shield).

Picks by what you read
Here, the PDF pick comes from 10-11-inch-class models that show a whole A4 page at 72% of paper size or more, whether the bars are 0 or 8 mm. The 72% line leaves out the cheaper 16:10 models, which fall short of it.
The picks are new, with 100+ Amazon.com ratings, 4.0+ stars and Amazon or the maker as the seller. Each is the cheapest that meets its condition, shipping included. Check the price on Amazon.com before you buy.
Novels and shinsho manga on an 8-inch tablet
The Fire HD 8 (8.0 in) shows a bunko page at about 102% of paper size, which is borderline. Shinsho manga shows at about 93-96% and B6 manga at about 84%. It weighs 337 g, or 11.9 oz. Per Amazon’s developer docs, Fire tablets can’t use Google services such as Google Play. Reading apps come from the Amazon Appstore.
Whether the rating count is shared with other models on the listing wasn't checked.
B6 manga at paper size on a budget
The Fire HD 10 (10.1 in) shows a B6 manga page at about 106% of paper size. It is the smallest screen in the 10-11-inch class, so the page is only slightly larger than paper, which is borderline. Like the Fire HD 8, it can’t use Google Play.
A4 PDFs on one portrait page, on a 10-11-inch tablet
Its screen is a bit squarer than most tablets (about 10:7), and it shows A4 at about 74% of paper size.
The rating count is shared with other models on the same listing.
A4 PDFs and magazines near paper size
The Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ (13.1 in) shows a whole A4 page at about 83% of paper size and a B5 magazine page at about 96%. It is the cheapest 12-13-inch tablet that meets the rating and seller conditions. It weighs 664 g, or 23.4 oz.
FAQ
What size tablet is best for reading?
Calculated for tablets on Amazon.com, showing one whole page in portrait, Japanese bunko paperbacks (4.1 x 5.8 in) fit on an 8-inch tablet, though 8.0 inches is borderline. B6 manga (5.0 x 7.2 in) needs 10 inches or more; none of the tablets checked shows an A4 PDF at full paper size.
Is an 8-inch tablet big enough for novels?
Showing one page in portrait, on the 8-inch class, a fixed Japanese bunko page shows at about 102-110% of paper size, only slightly larger (borderline) on the smallest 8.0-inch screen. Changing the font size isn’t tested.
How big does a tablet need to be for manga?
Showing manga one page at a time, aim for 10 inches or more for B6 manga. The 10-11-inch class shows a page at paper size or larger, with 10.1 inches borderline.
Shinsho manga on the 8-inch class comes out about paper size or slightly smaller, depending on the model.
What size tablet can read PDF textbooks and papers?
Showing a whole A4 page in portrait, among the models checked, none shows it at full paper size, and even the 12.9-13.1-inch models in the table reach only about 83-88%. Held sideways and fit to width, the 10-11-inch class shows it larger than paper.
Is a cheap Android tablet fine for reading?
For page size, yes: size depends only on the screen’s dimensions, and the table includes budget Android models. But most budget Android models on Amazon.com have too few reviews or are sold by third-party sellers, so none is a pick.
Sharpness, brightness and glare aren’t compared here.
Data and formulas used (for verification)
How this was checked: Screen sizes are worked out from the makers’ official diagonal and resolution as of October 2026. The formulas, assumptions and page-size sources are in the data and formulas at the end of the article. Sources for the night-screen features:. Apple’s explanation. Samsung’s explanation.
Method
- Covers the official specifications of tablets listed on Amazon.com (Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo, Xiaomi and others) as of October 14, 2026. Nothing was tested on real devices. Only models with both an official screen size and resolution were calculated.
- Screen width and height come from the official diagonal (inches x 25.4 mm) and the aspect ratio of the resolution: short side = diagonal / sqrt(1 + ratio^2), long side = short side x ratio. Rounded corners are ignored.
- Scale of one whole page in portrait = min(screen short side / page width, (screen long side - bars) / page height). 100% means the same size as paper. Bars are assumed 0-8 mm; each range covers every model of that size class across this assumption.
- Page sizes: bunko (the Japanese paperback size, A6) = 4.1 x 5.8 in, or 105 x 148 mm; shinsho manga volume (the size of Japanese Jump Comics, two Shueisha listings) = 4.4 x 6.9 in, or 112 x 176 mm; B6 manga volume (one Japanese B6 book listing, same as JIS B6) = 5.0 x 7.2 in, or 128 x 182 mm; magazine = JIS B5 = 7.2 x 10.1 in, or 182 x 257 mm; PDF = A4 = 8.3 x 11.7 in, or 210 x 297 mm. bunko, shinsho, B6 and JIS B5 are Japanese book and paper sizes. Only these listings were checked for shinsho and B6; other publishers were not. A4-size magazines are read from the PDF (A4) column. Letter-size PDFs are not calculated.
- Landscape fit-to-width scale = screen long side / page width. Share of the page on one screen = screen short side / (page height x scale).
- Text size on screen = text size on paper (assumed: A4 body 10-11 pt, paperback body 8-9.5 pt; 1 pt is about 0.35 mm) x scale. A whole A4 page on the 8-inch class puts A4 body text at about 5.1-6.2 pt, smaller than paperback body text at 8-9.5 pt (estimate).
- Size classes: 8-inch class = 8-8.7 in, 10-11-inch class = 10.1-11.5 in, 12-13-inch class = 11.95-13.1 in (range of the Amazon.com models checked). The 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S Ultra models are sold on Amazon.com but are not put in any class or compared for the picks; for reference, A4 would show at about 93% of paper size and B5 at about 107%. Weights are official Wi-Fi model figures. Two 13.4-inch models are not calculated: the TECLAST T65 has no official maker spec page (only Amazon listings), and the DOOGEE Tab G6 Max has no official resolution.
- That Fire tablets can’t use Google Play or other Google services comes from Amazon’s developer documentation; no consumer help page stating it was found.
- PDF pick (10-11-inch class, A4 shown at 72% or more of paper on one portrait page), excluded models: every 10-11-inch model listed cheaper than the iPad (A16) 11-inch on Amazon.com, and meeting the rating and seller conditions, falls short. Formula: min(short screen side / 210, (long side - bar) / 297). Fire HD 10 (10.1-inch 16:10) about 64.7%; Galaxy Tab S10 Lite (10.9-inch 16:10) about 69.9%; Galaxy Tab A11+ (11-inch 16:10) about 70.5%. Checked 2026-10-15.
Assumptions
- Reading apps hide the top and bottom bars in full screen, but some views keep them. The article subtracts 0-8 mm from the long side in portrait (no official figure; roughly one thin bar at the top and bottom).: 0 (0–8)
- Body text size of A4 documents and papers. There is no fixed standard; the article assumes the common 10-11 pt.: 10.5 (10–11)
- Body text size of a Japanese paperback (bunko). It varies by publisher and no official standard was found, so the article holds 8-9.5 pt.: 8.75 (8–9.5)
