By this article’s unofficial targets, writing alone takes 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Photo editing takes 16 GB (borderline, the low end of Adobe’s recommendation) and a 512 GB SSD, with an AVX2 Intel or AMD CPU or an Arm CPU.
By official requirements, the minimums are 4 GB of RAM for Windows 11 and 8 GB for Adobe’s photo apps. A laptop with exactly that much is borderline.
This covers Windows laptops as of October 2026, not Chromebooks or Macs. Only official requirements and makers’ spec figures are used; speed and comfort weren’t tested on real hardware and aren’t judged.
AVX2 is a CPU instruction set, listed on the CPU maker’s spec page. Arm is a type of CPU, as in Snapdragon laptops. GPU memory, when given, is on the laptop’s spec page.

Windows 11 minimums and this article’s targets
Per Microsoft, Windows 11 needs at least 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage and a compatible 64-bit CPU with 2 cores or more. For graphics, it needs DirectX 12 with a WDDM 2.0 driver. It also needs TPM 2.0 and a 720p display.
Writing needs Windows 11’s 64 GB and photo editing needs 74 GB with 10 GB for Adobe’s apps, so both fit on a 128 GB SSD. Microsoft notes updates can need more space, and a figure for photos and catalogs wasn’t found on the official pages. So this article’s own targets are 256 GB for writing and 512 GB for photo editing.
| Item | Official minimum | Target (writing only) | Target (photo editing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAM | Windows 11 4 GB, Adobe 8 GB | 8 GB | 16 GB (borderline, at the low end of the recommendation) |
| Storage | Windows 11 64 GB, photo editing 74 GB | 256 GB | 512 GB |
| Screen | Windows 11 720p, Photoshop 1280 × 800 at 100% scaling, or 1920 × 1080 at 150% scaling | 1920 × 1080 or higher | 1920 × 1080 or higher |
| CPU | Compatible 64-bit, 2 cores or more | Per Windows 11’s requirements | AVX2 Intel or AMD, or Arm |
| GPU | Windows 11 DirectX 12 with a WDDM 2.0 driver; for photo editing, Adobe’s GPU memory 2 GB (Arm Photoshop 4 GB) | DirectX 12 with a WDDM 2.0 driver, per Windows 11 | DirectX 12 with a WDDM 2.0 driver, plus 2 GB or more on Intel or AMD and 4 GB or more on Arm |
Checking the CPU and GPU memory for photo editing
Per Adobe and Intel, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop require an Intel or AMD CPU with AVX2. Intel’s spec page lists only SSE4.2 for the Celeron N4120, with no AVX2, so it doesn’t meet that requirement. Check each model’s CPU on Intel’s or AMD’s spec page.
Per Adobe’s Windows requirements, the cloud-based Lightroom asks for a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU with SSE 4.2 and has no AVX2 line. The AVX2 requirement belongs to Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.
For Arm CPUs such as Snapdragon, Lightroom Classic lists ARM processors “via emulation,” and Photoshop’s Windows on ARM table sets a 4 GB GPU memory minimum. The cloud-based Lightroom’s Windows requirements don’t mention Arm.
The GPU must support DirectX 12, with GPU memory of at least 2 GB for Lightroom Classic and Lightroom and 1.5 GB for Photoshop. Adobe recommends 4 GB for 4K displays and above. By this guide’s method, models whose spec pages don’t list GPU memory aren’t judged against Adobe’s minimum.
Daily carry: 1.4 kg or less and 10 hours or more of battery
By this article’s unofficial targets, for daily carry, the target is 1.4 kg or less and at least 10 hours for the shorter of the maker’s stated battery figures. The 10 hours line is only for narrowing down models; it doesn’t mean figures from different tests can be compared.
Per the makers’ spec pages, weights run 1.36 kg for a 13.8-inch example, up to 1.90 kg for a 15.6-inch one and from 2.02 kg for a 17.3-inch one. Only the 13.8-inch example fits this article’s 1.4 kg target, and only just (borderline). The 15.6- and 17.3-inch examples are sizes for using mostly at a desk.
Even a laptop with 10 hours or more of battery can run out on a heavy day. A power bank that gives 45 W or more from one USB-C port and is under 100 Wh can top it up.
Check the laptop’s spec page for USB PD charging and its AC adapter’s wattage. 45 W is only a floor; if the adapter is rated above the power bank’s one-port output, charging may be slow or fail.
It is the cheapest checked product meeting the conditions. It has 100+ ratings and 4.0+ stars and is sold new by Amazon.com or the maker, not as a gray-market import or recalled model. As of October 2026, the pick gives up to 65 W from one USB-C port and holds 72 Wh; the 87 W in its name is the total.

How to compare battery life figures
By this guide’s method, battery figures are compared only within the same test, such as one maker’s web-browsing test against the same test. Figures from different tests aren’t converted, and real-world run time isn’t estimated.
Per the makers’ spec pages, the Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (8th Edition) is rated up to 20 hours of video and up to 16 hours of web browsing in Microsoft’s tests. Those ran at 150 nits on preproduction units, so only compare them with figures from the same test.
Screen resolution and keyboard layout
By this article’s unofficial targets, the display target is 1920 × 1080 or higher, the same as the recommended resolution for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.
Per the official minimums, a 1366 × 768 screen meets the minimums for Windows 11 and Lightroom Classic. It’s exactly at Lightroom’s 1280 × 768 height, so it’s borderline. It’s 32 pixels short of Photoshop’s minimum height, which is 1280 × 800 at 100% scaling.
When buying in the US, look for the keyboard layout line (US English, UK or Japanese) on the spec page or store listing. Also check whether the seller marks it as an import.
FAQ
Is 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM enough for just writing a blog?
By official requirements, a 4 GB laptop is exactly at Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum for writing, so it’s borderline, while 8 GB is this article’s target. That target isn’t an official figure, and it comes with a 256 GB SSD.
How much RAM do I need for blog photo editing in Lightroom or Photoshop?
Per Adobe’s Windows requirements, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom and Photoshop all need at least 8 GB, so an 8 GB laptop is exactly at the minimum and borderline. This article’s target is 16 GB, which is exactly the low end of Adobe’s recommendation, so it’s borderline too.
Each official memory figure is for one app on its own; there’s no figure for running Lightroom Classic and Photoshop together, so that isn’t judged here.
Can a cheap Celeron laptop run Lightroom Classic or Photoshop?
Per Adobe and Intel, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop require an Intel or AMD CPU with AVX2. Intel’s spec page lists only SSE4.2 for the Celeron N4120, with no AVX2, so it doesn’t meet that requirement.
Per Adobe’s Windows requirements, the cloud-based Lightroom asks for a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU with SSE 4.2 and has no AVX2 line. The AVX2 requirement belongs to Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.
Is a 128GB SSD enough?
By official requirements, writing needs Windows 11’s 64 GB and photo editing needs 74 GB with 10 GB for Adobe’s apps, so both fit on a 128 GB SSD. Microsoft notes updates can need more space, and a figure for photos and catalogs wasn’t found on the official pages.
So this article’s own targets are 256 GB for writing and 512 GB for photo editing.
Is a 1366 × 768 screen okay?
Per the official minimums, a 1366 × 768 screen meets the minimums for Windows 11 and Lightroom Classic. It’s exactly at Lightroom’s 1280 × 768 height, so it’s borderline.
It’s 32 pixels short of Photoshop’s minimum height, which is 1280 × 800 at 100% scaling.
Is it okay to buy a Windows 10 or used laptop?
Per Microsoft, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) run only until October 12, 2027. If you buy used, pick a machine that meets Windows 11’s requirements, including a compatible 64-bit CPU (check with PC Health Check) and TPM 2.0.

How this was checked:
Sources: Windows 11 specifications, Windows 11 requirements, Windows 10 end of support and Windows 10 ESU / Lightroom Classic system requirements, Lightroom system requirements and Photoshop system requirements / Intel Celeron N4120 specifications
Method
- Official minimum for writing = Windows 11’s minimum requirements (two Microsoft pages): 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, A compatible 64-bit processor or SoC, 1 GHz or faster, with 2 or more cores (Check with PC Health Check), DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver, TPM 2.0, and 720p (HD) display larger than 9 inches diagonally, 8 bits per color channel. Browsers and editors publish no RAM figure, so writing is judged against the Windows 11 minimum.
- Official minimum for photo editing = the higher of Windows 11 and Adobe’s Windows requirements. RAM: Lightroom Classic 8 GB, Lightroom 8 GB, Photoshop 8 GB (all recommend 16 GB or more). CPU: Lightroom Classic and Photoshop require Intel or AMD CPU with AVX2 support required; the cloud-based Lightroom asks for Intel or AMD, 64-bit with SSE 4.2, 2 GHz or faster (no AVX2 or Arm line). Arm: Lightroom Classic lists ARM processors via emulation; Photoshop lists WinARM, with 4 GB of GPU memory in its Windows on ARM table. GPU: GPU with DirectX 12 support, 2 GB of GPU memory for Lightroom Classic, GPU with DirectX 12 (feature level 12_0 or later), 1.5 GB of GPU memory (4 GB recommended for 4K displays and greater) for Photoshop. Free space: Lightroom Classic 8 GB, Lightroom 10 GB, Photoshop 10 GB (for the app). Each figure is per app; running them together isn’t judged.
- Official minimums are matched to memory tiers of 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB and SSD tiers of 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB (tiers chosen for this article). SSD needed = Windows 11’s 64 GB plus the largest app free-space figure. If the headroom (value minus what it’s compared with) is under 10% of what it’s compared with, it’s marked borderline (a threshold set for this article). 4 GB is exactly Windows 11’s minimum, 8 GB exactly Adobe’s minimum and 16 GB exactly the low end of Adobe’s recommendation, so each is borderline.
- This article’s own targets (not official figures): memory 8 GB for writing (twice Windows 11’s minimum) and 16 GB for photo editing (the low end of Adobe’s recommendation). Storage 256 GB for writing and 512 GB for photo editing (official figures fit in 128 GB, but Microsoft notes updates can need more and there’s no official figure for photos and catalogs). Display 1920 x 1080 or higher (the same as the recommended resolution for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop). For daily carry, 1.4 kg or less, and the shorter of the maker’s stated battery figures at 10 hours or more (a line for narrowing down models, not a way to compare different tests).
- Display check: 1366 x 768 meets Windows 11 (720p) and Lightroom Classic’s 1024 x 768 minimum, is exactly at Lightroom’s 1280 x 768 height, and is 32 pixels short of Photoshop’s minimum height at 100% scaling (1280 x 800 at 100% scaling, or 1920 x 1080 at 150% scaling). Weight examples are from makers’ spec pages: 13.8-inch 1.36 kg (Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (8th Edition), Japanese spec page; the US page says 1342 g), 15.6-inch 1.9 kg (Dell 15 DC15255, maximum), 17.3-inch 2.02 kg (HP OmniBook 3 17-dp0000, starting weight).
- Battery figures are used exactly as the maker states them, with their test. Japan’s standard test is JEITA 3.0 (Reports video playback and idle run times separately; brightness 200 cd/m2 or more; video 3840 x 2160, 60 fps, H.264/AVC, 75.5 Mbps video bitrate). The Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (8th Edition) figures come from Microsoft’s own tests (local video playback 20 hours, web browsing 16 hours; May 2026, preproduction Snapdragon X2 Plus 16GB/512GB units, 150 nits), not JEITA. Figures from different tests aren’t converted, and real-world run time isn’t estimated.
- AVX2 is checked in the instruction set extensions on Intel’s spec page (for example, the Celeron N4120 lists Intel SSE4.2 (no AVX2 listed)). Models whose spec pages don’t list GPU memory aren’t judged against Adobe’s GPU minimum. Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14; consumer ESU runs until 2027-10-12. Speed and comfort weren’t tested on real hardware and aren’t judged. Products must have 100+ ratings and 4+ stars, be sold new by Amazon or the maker, match the maker’s spec page by model, not be imports, and be a current model. As of October 8, 2026, no qualifying listing was found on Amazon.co.jp (the GLM GM-JAPAN model number couldn’t be matched). On Amazon.com, the Surface Laptop 13.8-inch 7th Edition is the previous generation (The current model is the 8th Edition (Snapdragon X2 Plus / X2 Elite)), 8th Edition listings had at most 27 ratings, and the other Windows laptops with 100+ ratings and 4+ stars were over 1.4 kg or previous-generation models.
- The power bank (slot power) is one that can charge a laptop (at least 45 W from one USB-C port, under 100 Wh), picked with the criteria above (checked on Amazon.co.jp on 2026-10-10). The chosen Anker A1383 gives up to 65 W from one USB-C port and 87 W in total (the 87W in its name is the total), with 72 Wh (calculated as 20000mAh × 3.6V).

| Writing only, Mostly at home | ✓ From 8 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Official minimum (Windows 11): 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, a compatible 64-bit CPU with 2 or more cores, DirectX 12 graphics, TPM 2.0, a 720p display. Browsers and editors publish no RAM figure, so this uses the Windows 11 minimum. A 4 GB laptop is exactly at Windows 11’s minimum, borderline. Storage on official figures alone: Windows 11’s 64 GB, which fits a 128 GB SSD (Microsoft notes updates can need more). This article’s own targets (not official figures). Memory: 8 GB or more (twice Windows 11’s minimum; this article’s choice). SSD: 256 GB or more (this article’s choice). Display: 1920 × 1080 or higher (the same as the recommended resolution for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop). Check the keyboard layout on the maker’s spec page | Open with these settings |
| Writing + photo editing (Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, etc.), Carry it daily | △ From 16 GB RAM (borderline) and a 512 GB SSD. Official minimum (Windows 11): 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, a compatible 64-bit CPU with 2 or more cores, DirectX 12 graphics, TPM 2.0, a 720p display. Official minimum (Adobe): 8 GB RAM (16 GB or more recommended). The same for Lightroom Classic, Lightroom and Photoshop. An 8 GB laptop is exactly at Adobe’s minimum, borderline. CPU: Lightroom Classic and Photoshop require an Intel or AMD CPU with AVX2. CPUs without AVX2, such as the Celeron N4120, don’t qualify. Check each CPU model on Intel’s or AMD’s spec page. The cloud-based Lightroom asks for a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU with SSE 4.2 and lists neither AVX2 nor Arm. Arm (Snapdragon and others): Lightroom Classic lists ARM processors “via emulation,” and Photoshop’s Windows on ARM table sets a 4 GB GPU memory minimum (speed not tested). GPU: DirectX 12, with at least 2 GB of GPU memory for Lightroom Classic and Lightroom and 1.5 GB for Photoshop (4 GB recommended for 4K displays and above). Models whose spec pages don’t list GPU memory aren’t judged. Each official figure is for one app on its own; running several together isn’t judged. Storage on official figures alone: Windows 11’s 64 GB + 10 GB for the apps = 74 GB, which fits a 128 GB SSD (Microsoft notes updates can need more). This article’s own targets (not official figures). Memory: 16 GB or more (exactly the low end of Adobe’s recommendation, borderline). SSD: 512 GB or more (there’s no official figure for photos and catalogs, so this is the article’s own choice). Display: 1920 × 1080 or higher (the same as the recommended resolution for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop). Weight: 1.4 kg or less. Battery: the shorter of the maker’s stated figures at 10 hours or more (a line for narrowing down models, not a way to compare different tests). Compare battery figures only when they come from the same test, and note which test each comes from. Figures from different tests aren’t converted, and real-world run time isn’t estimated.
